Based on your understanding of the reports swirling around, how do you personally feel about Cam’s guilt?
He’s laughing all the way to the bank. He’s guiltier than OJ.
The evidence is pretty overwhelming. And no, I would not vote for him for the Heisman. Especially in light of the Reggie Bush fiasco.
I think he probably is. If that causes a fundamental shift in how “college football” is done then it will be a good thing. I can see something ore along the lines of how baseball does it. There could be players that go to college and play there, and then some kind of developmental league. Keep the age restrictions on when a player can get to the pros.
Get rid of the nonsense that (some of) these guys are even part of the school as a whole. I’m not saying get rid of college football entirely, just get out of the business of football factories. Or let them just declare that they are majoring in football.
We might even get a playoff system for college then…
Yeah he is probably guilty, though I can’t say I care too much.
Educate me. What would he be “guilty” of? I thought the school giving him money would be the guilty party.
Undecided. The “evidence” is all rumor and innuendo, with precious little fact so far. If you start digging in to CFB message boards, the rumors (and the spin) start to get absolutely insane. I think something probably happened, although I don’t know its nature.
Accepting the money, of course. This would make him ineligible as an amateur athlete, which is how college students are defined by the NCAA. The institution (whether Auburn, Miss State, etc.) would be guilty as well.
I voted for explanation, but there’s too much smoke about it for there to be no fire. It’s entirely possible that people surrounding him tried to keep him in the dark to provide plausible deniability. If there was money given, then Auburn is much more guilty than the Newtons, and the agents are the worst of all.
If the shit does hit the fan, Cam is the one who gets the worst of it, when really it the NCAA’s fault.
So far, I’m the No vote. I do think there’s some fire under the smoke. I do think the father is less than blameless, I do think MSU is guilty of some smear tactics. I won’t be surprised to hear that UF has had more than passing interest. I do expect the “investigation” to be incomplete by time for the BCSCG.
I expect somebody else to win the Heisman. I expect AU to win the BCSCG.
I think Cam has done some things he’s not proud of, but I don’t think he has taken money for the Auburn gig.
I expect him to enter the NFL draft ASAP.
I can only hope that “the media” (ESPN especially) take a major hit for all they’ve done with the timing of all this.
Does the NFL have any rule forbidding a team from signing a player found guilty of accepting money as an amateur?
@ Zeldar - But you’re speaking as an Auburn fan, right? I’m not saying that ESPN hasn’t reported on the story almost constantly. But have they been unfair somehow? Of course they’re going to break the story. It’s far too huge not to, but I’ve seen at least as much “now hold on. Innocent until proven guilty” as anything else.
Nope, which is a huge problem.Cam Newton, this time next year, will probably be rich beyond his wildest dreams, Heisman or no, national championship or no.
Hmm. That’s what I thought. Well, if he is guilty, then where can I go to turn myself in?
Why is it a problem? What would the NFL gain by enforcing the NCAA’s laughable “amateur athlete” rules?
Cam Newton was going to get a lot of money when he went pro regardless of whether he got paid to play with a given college. It smacks me as a lack of patience to pull something like that.
There has been some of that CYA noise after the bombshell. But the drag-their-feet nature of the SEC and NCAA “investigation” would have made this an off-season or even next-season news item if they hadn’t rushed to insert it into the Heisman dialog and BCS chatter.
Have you noticed how their BCS show has been dissing Auburn from the get-go?
ESPN has something to gain from the SEC connection, for sure. But they seem to be dumping their love on Bama and the Gators and not the SEC as a group. I have yet to figure what about Auburn pisses them off so much.
Oh, yeah. War Eagle!
Why wouldn’t the NFL cooperate with the NCAA? If the NCAA puts teams on suspension, that strongly affects their future recruitment into the NFL. CFB is an on-stage rehearsal for the pros. It’s in the NFL’s best interest to respect the rules of their farm teams’ governing body.
Meh. You have strongly orange-and-blue colored glasses. Ever since Bama lost to Carolina, we’ve been off the front page. Auburn, from my perspective, has been steadily rising in ESPN’s esteem all season (they weren’t supposed to be that good this year), until it seemed like it was ALL Auburn.
I figured he was probably guilty just based on all the smoke, and then his press conference the other day removed any doubt. That was the worst performance of playing innocent I’ve ever seen. He apparently went to the Mark McGwire school of refusing to talk about the past." No doubt he’s as dirty as can be. Plus he’s a cheat and a criminal.
At this point, Auburn should just cut their losses, suspend him pending an investigation, and hope like hell that the eventual NCAA sanctions aren’t too harsh.
Well for starters they would get sued and lose. Beyond that why would the nfl care if their players got paid to play. That is kind of the idea of the nfl.
