I’m looking to invest in some computer speakers and I don’t know exactly what to buy. I’m probably going to end up buying the Sound Blaster Platinum Live 5.1 and Sound Blaster offers a companion set of speakers made by cambridge. First of all I was wondering what yall had to say about Cambridge. Second What kind of speakers do you have and do you like them? and Finally if anyone has the cambridge/Sound Blaster Combination I would love to hear your comments.
The SB Platinum is a great and generally well reviewed card, I have two of them, and I use them for pro and semi pro work, (they have good SPDIF and surprisingly flat converters for a consumer card). As for speakers, can’t really help you there, unless you are interested in Mackie HR824 nearfield reference monitors, which are fansastic but not really practical for most folks.

I got a set of Cambridge SoundWorks PCWorks… those are the ones with the sub and 2 satellites. They’re pretty good, but I would’ve prefered to get some Altec Lansing ACS33’s… the Altec’s have a bit more power, and (only going from distant memory) sound a bit clearer, but the PCWorks were only $49 (CAN) during the Boxing Day sales, so I got a set…
I haven’t been disappointed by them, but don’t have much to compare them to
I have the Cambridge Soundwork Microworks - the higher end soundworks, and I must say they’re great. OTOH, comparisons I’ve seen between them and the THX certified Klipsch Promedias (the speakers I would’ve gotten if they were available when I was in the market for such) give the edge to the Promedias. If you don’t mind paying a few extra bucks - about $250 for the 4.1, IIRC - that’s definitely the way to go. Cambridge ain’t bad, though. Check out the DTT2500 Digital (not quite as good as the Microworks, but they’re digital whereas the Microworks are analog). Hope this helped.
If you’re getting the SB Plat Live 5.1 card + asscessories, then I assume you have money to burn so you might as well go full fledge with the FPS 3500 DDT 5.1 Digital. They’re great speakers at CAN$350. But if you’re on a budget, the lesser FPS (2000 priced @ CAN$179, 2200 @ CAN$166, 2500 DDT @ CAN$250) are pretty good too but their frequency range at the lowest (the bass) is only at 30 Hz. But it’s smooth bass when you do hear it. Note that the 2200 is doesn’t have a Digital input (I just got that clarified last night when I was shopping for speakers too).
Overall, they’re pretty good speakers and you can even hook it up to your TV. But like KKB said, you can go for high end speakers like Boss, Kiplch(?), or Monsoons.
