Where I used to grow up, Central Alabama, every Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day for sure and probably other warm-weather special occasions as well, there would be a big picnic and cooking spree in the local city park where in addition to barbecue and all the veggies that went with it, there was normally Camp Stew. Barbecue joints in that area still provide Camp Stew as a side, but you don’t have to travel far from there before the stuff starts getting other names.
This website is one among several I found with a Yahoo! search for the ingredients, and it has a lot of details I won’t copy into the OP in hopes you’ll go there to read further: http://www.roadfood.com/Forums/tm.aspx?m=393006&mpage=
I have had Brunswick Stew and Burgoo and both of them have similar texture and flavor and a fair number of the same ingredients.
What I’m curious about in this thread is:
-
Have you ever had Camp Stew as such?
-
Based on the ingredients list(s), have you had something similar, and if so, what was it called?
-
What stews are the main type where you live? (Major ingredients would be a good clue as to how they differ from Camp Stew.)
-
Have you found a store-bought prepared stew that comes close?
