Campylobacter food poisoning

I’m just now getting over food poisoning caused by campylobacter. In fact, the doc just called me and told me what I have.

You don’t want to get this. To put it euphamistically, there were two days in which I was “visiting” the toilet about every 5-10 minutes.

Cook your chicken well and maintain sanitary conditions. I probably got mine from a yakitori restaurant in Tokyo. At any rate, be healthy.

Glad you are back and feeling better, I hope. Food poisoning is nothing to mess around with for sure.

Yep, thanks a lot. It’s usually much worse than the average cold or flu, IME.

I had this last year and it’s nasty. It stands out as one of the worse bouts of anything I have ever had – **tmi coming up ** --I started pooing blood twelve hours in, which is when I called the doctor out in the middle of the night.

Glad to hear you are getting over it Aeschines, a word to the wise, it was a while before I could eat normally again, a month before I could drink milk so take it easy. My doctor friend told me that you lose your bowel lining with campylobacter, hence the blood and the general visciousness of the thing.

Campylobacter”? I’m getting this image: “Oh, girl! I am so going to infect your tushie, Sweetums! I’m so fabulous!

Yeah, I didn’t seem to get the blood thing, but man, was it rough!

Thanks for the symp.

I did a research project on Campylobacter jejuni for a whole year and it scared the bejeezus out of me. Not only will it f*ck up your intestinal lining, in very rare cases it can cause Gullain-Barre syndrome, in which your immune cells attack the myelin sheaths on your nerves, leading to paralysis. (This is extremely rare, but it does happen).

Please, please, please, cook all poultry until the inside is no longer pink and the juices run clear, and don’t be ashamed to refuse meat at someone’s house or a restaurant if it’s not fully cooked.

Just out of curiosity, were you diagnosed with C. jejuni, C. lari, or another species?

My older daughter got this when she was about 3. She spent days in the hospital, very sick. I’m fairly sure I know where she got it.

As tsarina said, “Please, please, please, cook all poultry until the inside is no longer pink and the juices run clear, and don’t be ashamed to refuse meat at someone’s house or a restaurant if it’s not fully cooked.”
