On another messageboard I use, when a message is reported to the moderators, it gains a footer saying ‘This message has been reported’.
I’m wondering if that would be possible and useful on the Dope? It would prevent umpteen reports of spam.
I’ve seen things like “Reported post #7” or “Reported OP as spam” on this board, especially when the rule-breaking was really obvious.
I think Quartz is talking about an automated notification.
For obvious spam I can see it being useful. But for “I find this post offensive” type reports it’s useless and possibly inflammatory. How would the code know which type of report it is?
I would imagine that the user reporting the post would still be required to provide an explanation as they are now (I can’t remember the details, been a while since I reported something).
What the OP is talking about is simply a note against the post to let other posters know that it has been reported, so that they don’t feel they need to report it as well, thus reducing the amount of work for the admin team.
I dunno–it’s an interesting idea. I’m always curious about what other folks’ level of tolerance is for dickish posts. Am I hypersensitive? Am I thick-skinned? If it turns out that posts that annoy me don’t annoy anyone else, I’m willing to report fewer posts. If it turns out that lots of other folks have reported posts that don’t rise to my level of annoyance, that tells me something else.
(FTR, I don’t report posts very often, but I do sometimes, especially when they hit my pet peeves of accusations of dishonesty or snide metaphors comparing someone’s posts to rape/masturbation).
Not in the current version of vB we’re using, which is not the most current.
As of the present time no updates are scheduled that I know of.
I think it would be a bad idea on several levels.
People reporting posts are frequently incorrect. The post violates no rules, and the complaint is misplaced. No moderator action is required. It would be inappropriate to have them flagged as reported.
I think that this is particularly helpful to other posters when it’s spam. I don’t think that a message should be automatically generated in a post or thread if someone reports it…especially if the message notes who reported it.
Nah. It would be sort of like a poorly implemented karma system.
