Alright, My friends have just introduced me to the game Dungeons & Dragons, I just happen to have walked into the middle of one of their current games, and they don’t really have that much time to keep me up to speed.
I filled out a character profile and here is what I decided to do:
Human, Mage, Chaotic Neutral, [The Dungeon master let me be level 7 just to even out the game], I worship Bocco, And I chose as my feats… Scribe Scroll, Summon Familiar, Still Spell, Maximize Spell, Craft Wand.
I don’t know any spells so does anyone know any spells that a level 7 mage can do?
I have Craft wand, what level and other requirements do I need to make a wand to control a dragon?
Also get your paws on a Player’s Guide to look up spells (They’re near the back) I’m not familiar with sorcerors/wizards, I usually play bards or paladins.
Get your DM to sit down with you and give you a run down on how to use magic. Sorcerors and wizards have two entirely different styles. There are also a lot of house rules with magic (personal experiance) so figure out what your DM expects you to do.
And most importantly, take some time to figure out who your mage is. Role playing is acting the part of another person. It might involve some dice, but you have to have a handle on how your charactor behaves as a rule. Are they gruff or sweet, do they have a fondness for any particular thing, etc? If you want to get into the story and give them parents and an upbringing that’s called a background, but you can play without one as long as you know who your mage is now. You don’t have to plan out how he takes his coffee, but you should know his chances of hitting on the paladin at the inn. (How he deals with people!)
Thankyou very much. I went there and found a whole heap of spells in the spell book, I think the best one’s True Strike [next attack roll +20 points and not affected by miss chance due to concealed object]
If you have any general roleplaying questions, PerfectDark, I’d be happy to help you by e-mail. I’ve been playing for about 17 years now, and I’m running a campaign in D&D 3rd ed., though I’m just beginning to get familiar with it.
First, talk to the DM and find out what house rules are in effect, and where the DM’s campaign varies from the published ‘canon’ rules. That can have a huge effect on how you play your character, what spells you choose, et cetera.
Second, read up on the character description in the Player’s Handbook. Find out what the wizard (I’m assuming you’re a wizard, not a sorceror) is capable of and what the class’ strengths and weaknesses are.
Third, read up on the Feat descriptions. The feats you’ve picked sound good for a wizard (although creating a wand capable of controlling dragons may be WELL out of your character’s capacity for some time…).
Fourth, sit down and figure out what kind of character you want to play. What does your character look like physically? What is their personality like? What do they like and dislike? What is their speech pattern like? How well do they work in a group? What is their historical background, where are they from, how did they join the group? That really helps flesh out your character and makes them easier to play (and gives you a guideline for how to interact with the other characters).
Fifth, when choosing spells, consider what kind of wizard you are. Are you a battlemage who tosses killer fireball and lightning spells? Are you a sneaky mage who relies on shadows, illusion and invisibility? Are you a mind mage who uses charm and other mind-altering spells to get what he wants? Let that be your guide.
And as Gravity says, if you want advice or info, drop me an email - I’ve been playing for most of my life (and have been playing 3rd Edition since it came out) and would be happy to help.
Oh! and for some fun, head for http://www.heromachine.com and get a picture of your guy. I usually print them out in black and white and paint or color them in. But I’m crazy like that.
And don’t hesitate to e-mail us if you have a question you don’t want to run by the DM. Some of us are actually quite on top of things.
Hope you enjoy yourself - it’s a lifetime interest!
I’m still using 1st edition after 22 years, but my first character was Chaotic Neutral too. Now I’m Lawful Good - but you play it how you want to.
Hopefully your DM, or one of the players can spare some time to help. It can be a little tricky starting at 7th level.
You could try the Baldur’s Gate computer game to get some idea of working as a member of the party, and what monsters you can meet.
As a spellcaster, always try to have someone reliable between you and the opposition…
