…and no, it wasn’t that kind of “tell-all” book.
My mom picked it up at a library book sale a few years ago, and it dated from either the early 80s or the late 70s. It was written by the White House’s former Chief Usher, or someone like that, and it was sort of an “exposé” on the various flaws and failings about presidential procedures, security, etc.
One part in the book that I remember was mentioning abuses of “Air Force One,” and specifically one incident where AF1’s departure from an airport was delayed because the “backup plane” had to wait to load up all the family members of White House staffers; reporters; friends of politicians, etc.
Or maybe it was that the backup plane left BEFORE AF1, which it wasn’t supposed to do…I’m not sure. It’s been a long time since I’ve read the book.
So…can anyone I.D. this book for me, from my all-too vague description?
