Can anyone ID this song from Raiders of the Lost Ark?

Hi!

I’ve got a song stuck in my head - the one that Sallah sings after Marion kisses him goodbye at the docks, in “Raiders of the Lost Ark”.

It goes (I think): “A British man is a soaring soul, as free as a mountain bird…”

Does anybody out there know the rest of the words and music to this?

Type the words into Google. I don’t want to spoil it for you.

:smack:

Damn. I remember checking Google the last time I had this thought, a long long time ago, and getting nothing. Times change.

Thanks, and sorry for being a fool.

Also referenced in Star Trek: Insurrection.

I did the same search and found that it’s actually “A British tar”, not “man”. What’s a tar?

A ‘tar’ is a sailor. Probably something more specific, but it works for me.

British sailors were called “Jack-Tar” or simply “Tar” because their ships used tar as a waterprof sealant for the decks, bulkheads and just about anything. The black, sticky stuff got everywhere. Hands, clothing and they just got used to it and ignored it. Kind of simular to auto mechanics being called “grease monkeys”

Great song, it’s from “HMS Pinafore” by Gilbert and Sullivan. A light opera of lass who loved a sailor.

Sallah also sings another snatch from that musical, after he gets a kiss listen closely, he sings “I am the monarch of the sea, ruler of the king’s navy…” This was sung by a charactor of Sir Joseph Porter from the same musical. Find this at your library, You’ll love it.

Brian “Sea Chanty” Malion

“Queen’s Navy” unless Salah is insiting on be correcer about the (regining monarch).

Yes, “Queen’s Navee” I stand corrected. And it’s sung not when Salah’s kissed, but when they dicover that the Nazis are “digging in the wrong place.”
