Can anyone solve my Dell/Windows problem?

I just donwloaded a video and saved it to my shared video file. I got some sort of message that their is either a security problem with the file, or my computer did not have the right coding(?) for it (The video I do not believe has any dodgy content or anyhting like that). Each time I go to my shared videos folder now, it pulls up a list of all the videos there, but before I can try and delete the problem one, the entire page goes down. This happens no matter which route I take to access that folder. I have no interest in keeping the video now, but can anyone tell me how I can get rid of it so I can access the other stuff in there? Thanks!

I don’t recognize the error at all, so not sure if this will work, but one possible method you can try is by the command line.

  1. Go to the “Start” menu and click on “Run…”
  2. Type in “cmd” and click “ok”. This brings up the command prompt.
  3. Type in “cd <path to my video folder>”. The path is the part in address bar when your in the folder. In Windows XP Pro it is “C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Videos”
  4. Type “del <name of file>”. If you don’t remember the name of the file, type “dir” and it will list all files in the folder.

If any of that is unclear or doesn’t work, post back or otherwise contact me and I will try to help.

Thanks, I will try this tonight and let you know.

For the record, I expect what is happening here is that you don’t have the right codec installed. Codecs are algorithms that unpack the content of the file and convert it into viewable form - because Windows attempts to display the content of some folders in thumbnail format, it’s trying to unpack the video file and render a frame from it to use as a thumbnail, but is tripping up on the missing codec.

Another way to delete it without going to the specific folder is to click Start>Search and use the search wizard to locate it, then delete the file when it appears in the search results.
