I have a cover version of a old Jamaican mento tune called “Fan me soldier man”.
The version I have was recorded by The Spinners, a folk group from Liverpool UK.
I have loved the song from childhood but I cannot decipher the lyrics.
Is there anyone who can transcribe the lyrics, and also give a sense of what the chorus means (“Fan me soldier man, fan me”)?
My assumption is that it’s about a girl of loose character, but I can’t really get much more than that in the verses! I suspect it’s probably something that my 3 y/old daughter ought not to listen to, but it’s pretty much incomprehensible so I’m not too worried.
