Can Brits/Americans fit into the other's political system?

I’m a Brit who has moved to America. In the UK, I was a conservative and was pretty much in tune with most of the views of the Conservative party. Having moved to the US, I find that I just don’t “fit” with either the Republican or Democratic party, by quite a long way. If I had a vote, I would find it difficult to use it as there are elements of both parties that I find obnoxious.

Does our upbringing tend to manipulate us into having, in general, views that match one of the political parties in our home country? I’m interested in whether any people of British or American upbringing have swapped countries and encountered a similar problem.

Actually, there’s no need to limit it to US/UK - any two countries will do.
