I was with a coworker’s apt and playing with her cat. I got a few hairs on me. My friend picked up the coworker’s cat. When she put the cat down. Boom a ton of fur left on her.
I know that a cat will shed more when nervous but can they control this shedding?
It was a huge difference in fur. I mean the cat sat in my lap and was really comfortable with me. It seem leary of my friend.
I have never noticed my cat to shed more on one person then the other. She is shorter haired and really doesn’t shed that much at all.
However, when I bring her to the vet we leave enough hair to build a new cat. I guess that is the being nervous thing. Not willingly exactly but not completely normal either.
I saw the same thing in my cat before he joined the choir invisible. The vet said it was very common. When cats get scared they turn loose of their fur.
I don’t know if this counts, but cats can release sections of fur that is being pulled at by something. I don’t know if this is voluntary or just an instinctive reaction. However my 9 month old son gets hands full of hair rather easily.
Maybe it was shedding because it was excited/pleased rather than scared. I’ve noticed that my cat leaves piles of fur after lying in one place and snoozing for much of the day.
Additionally, if it hadn’t been combed in a while, maybe you just loosened fur that was ready to drop by petting it. Even short-haired cats need a good comb now and then.
I reckon they voluntarily shed white hair if you are wearing black clothing, and black hair if you are wearing white clothing. This from my sample of only one cat, admittedly!.
