Can Democrats actually stop the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh?

Yes. With the small caveat that in this particular situation, he doesn’t have 50 votes until the Senate official tallies 50 votes tomorrow.

General note - Unless there is evidence to be presented, I’m instructing everyone to drop this hijack.

C’mon guys, there are only like 25 hours left. Don’t get this thread locked now.

If either Manchin sticks with his yes or Daines come back for the vote, otherwise they are at 49.

Second warning. You’re expected to follow moderator instructions.

I’m sure that if Daines isn’t back within 30 hours of this morning’s vote, Mitch will hold the vote until he gets there.

Greg Gianforte (damn glad that guy is in Congress) offered to loan him a jet:

Daines should make the vote.

Sorry for the delay in response. I dashed off the post as I was on my way out the door to meet a friend for breakfast.

I think as a woman, you’re entirely correct. My comments were based on her as a Republican vote for a conservative justice on the SCOTUS.

Moot point… I think she and Flake will vote the same. I’d love to be wrong on this one. Collins will really surprise me if she’s a no vote.

Flake is, as usual, a disappointment. Again. He had a lot less to lose than Collins does, and he still couldn’t man up and do the right thing. I thought he was more politically astute.

We may not see eye to eye on much, but yeah, let’s not get this thread killed. At least not until after the vote.

He punches out reporters, but he’s got a jet he can loan a fellow Republican, so it’s all OK.

Well, it’s not actually up to McConnell. The only people who can withdraw the nomination are Trump and Kavanaugh, and they are soul brothers on a mission to make the world safe for gropers.

I mean, McConnell could theoretically come out against the nomination and flip his President a giant middle finger, but that’s pretty well outside the universe of reasonable possibilities. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was begging Trump to withdraw the nomination*, but in his position he doesn’t really have any choice but to try to push this flaming dumpster over the finish line before it gets too hot to touch.

*Of course, I’m basing that speculation on the notion that McConnell isn’t an idiot, not on the notion that he actually has any personal morals or scruples that might give him pause.

Does Manchin have any plans to announce his vote decision, or are we going to have to wait until the actual vote to see what he decided?

So, where can we watch / read Collins’ decision?

Lots GOP’s smiling and such after Collins meeting.

CNN/FOX I’d guess. Also C-SPAN2 if she does it on the senate floor.

Currently there are some hysterical protesters screaming from the gallery

Yeah, I pretty much agree with you. But a couple of years ago, I would have expressed the belief that it was pretty well outside the universe of reasonable possibilities for a Senate leader to refuse debate on a nominee - ESPECIALLY when the nominee was neither extremist not blatantly unqualified.

But, I guess I have to redefine the universe of reasonable possibilities to include ANYTHING that will help my party, without giving a damn about even pretending to be responsibly governing. Makes for a fucking bleak future!

Damn, if it is gonna be this ugly from now on, I sure wish the Dems were more effective streetfighters.

Tucker Carlson thinks the opposition to Kavanaugh has to do with wanting to destroy the white race.

Collins is complaining about the anti-Kav opposition. “Distortions of his record and testimony” etc. She’s sounding like a “yes” to me.

I agree. But she’s still talking.
