With my upcming wedding to TheLadyLion just a week away I’m left with the task of making sure my groomsen are more or less scrubbed and presentable. My new brother-in-law Pat will be fine I’m sure. I was concerned about my cousin Perry but his wife has gotten him to dress up when need be and he can look downright natty when the situation calls for it. The only two left are my new stepson Nick and my friend David.
Nick is a good kid but sometimes falls into the “25 going on 16” mode. I have to go with him to the rental place to make sure he gets fitted correctly and doesn’t end up with “gangsta baggy.” Not a mom-pleasing look and I’d really prefer it if TLL’s head doesn’t explode when she sees him. I talked to him on the phone this afternoon to schedule and he actually asked if he could get his clothes next Friday… the day before the wedding. I can’t blame him really. He never had to rent pants before and probably thinks it’s like getting a car at the airport. We’ll get him sorted out. I just hope he hasn’t shaved his head again since I’ve seen him last. I’m neutral but when mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy.
David remains and I have some real concern. Hard to describe him aside from “nebbishy Mormon Star Trek geek.” He always has a rumpled look and I don’t mean the good, “college professor with patches on the elbows of his tweed jacket” rumpled but “unmade bed.” I saw him last night at his house, presumably in his work clotthes (Unix admin, big suprise) and while technically in a white dress shirt and slacks he looked like a clerk at Fry’s electronics. For those of you not on the west coast the dress code seems to be white shirt, tie and black pants that were wadded in a duffle bag. I honestly think that ironing a shirt is against the dress code there. When we worked together at Bio-Dome I asked why he didn’t just wear polo shirts and chinos. Apart from the consideration of his temple garment showing he thought he’s look like a slob. I’ve got to talk to him about it tonight and I’m not looking forward to the conversation.
I suppose this is a venus/mars thing. Have to crack the whip on guys to get dressed up. Me too actually but I’ve got my stuff ready. Give all the bridesmaids an excuse for a new dress and they’re self motivated. TLL did a wise thing, she specified only the color of the dresses and left the style up to them. No one is forced to get something they’ll never wear again… Except for the bride.
