Can Foxes Climb Trees?

Pal sez foxhounds run foxes until they tire and climb a tree to escape. I say no.

Help!

Have you tried Google? +fox +climb +tree +escape**

[sub]hint: the answer is ‘yes’.[/sub]

Red and Gray Foxes will both climb, but the Gray Fox ( Urocyon cinereoargentus ) is much more likely do so, being especially well-adapted anatomically, with forelimbs that can rotate to an unusual degree.

Of the two, Gray Foxes are indeed reported to flee upwards on occasion. Red Foxes are much more likely to go to ground in cover, but probably will climb occasionally in extremis. Neither is likely to be able to go straight up all that quickly, if at all, but a leaning tree is another proposition entirely.
