Can I bring a safety razor on a plane?

Getting ready to take a flight and its been a long time. I think the last time I flew, there were still some smoking flights. I’m not packing anything except a carry on. Can I bring my razor? Its just a regular disposable cartridge razor. I can’t imagine how I could turn that into a weapon in the two hour flight, but don’t want any hassle. I’m quite sure someone has the answer without me having to go to ts website and parse vague info.
sorry for being lazy.

No.

Disposables are fine in carry-on luggage. Actual “safety” razors (the kind with replaceable razor blades) have to be checked, OR have the blades removed and checked.

Assuming you are asking about rules in the US, a disposable type razor is OK (a “safety razor” with blade is not) - you probably want to review the rules about other toiletries/liquids, and be prepared to take off your shoes, belt, remove EVERYTHING from your pockets, your phone and other devices from your bag, etc.

If you do, you might be cut man!

Nice Karl! Thank you to all for your responses. I will probably just grab a disposable when I land. I just really like the razor I have. It’s probably only gonna set me back 15 bucks. I’m just nervous about the “new” restrictions on air travel. Security theater is baffling to me, so I’m just trying to avoid the cavity search. Being a White Christian Male, I’m sure I’ll be fine.

What exactly do you have? Your subject said “safety razor” and your post said “disposable cartridge razor.” They’re not the same thing, as seen in mjmlabs’ not-vague pic. Despite the name, with a safety razor you can remove the blade and use it as a weapon.

I’m also wondering what you have - if it’s a modern cartridge type razor (rather than the old fashioned metal type that takes double edged blades) you’re fine.

(And why you think a disposable will cost you “15 bucks”? - for that money you can buy ~50 of these disposable razors - and any halfway decent hotel will give you one for free.)

It’s Just a razor from Harry’s. I’m sure I could just take the handle and pick up the cartridges in Denver. I just want to make as little disturbance as possible while at the airport. the $15 may have been hyperbole. I just like my razor and was curious if that was suitable for a carry on. I guess that “safety Razor” was the wrong description. I’m probably only gonna have to shave one time while I’m there. I realize now that I have probably made more of an issue than need be of this situation. Thank you all once again for your time.

Both modern, cartridge-type razors and - slightly less modern? - replaceable-blade-type razors are safety razors. Non-safety razors have an exposed blade, for example a straight razor, and therefore are not allowed wherever sharp blades are banned. Safety razors with the disposable blades are no good because you could potentially take the blade out and… stick it into a potato or something.

Your Harry’s razor and cartridges are fine, and probably more likely to actually cut any hairs than the cheap dime-store disposable razors.

Thank you dprk. I once again really appreciate the input. I think it would be safe for the mods to close now, unless this begs more discussion.

Hit up TSA at AskTSA on Twitter or Facebook Messenger with any “Can I fly with this?” questions as well as issues like missing the PreCheck designation on your boarding pass or items left behind at the checkpoint. They’re quick to answer and quick-witted as well.

Also, if you ever discuss safety razors with TSA or a flight attendant, by all means don’t tell them your other name is cutman74 !

Just take it. A lot of people don’t even have checked bags, guess where their razors are?

This. In a test, they missed something like 67 of 72 guns. At most with a razor they give you the option of mailing it to yourself or tossing it. If it’s not that expensive or sentimental, just toss it if they find it & buy a new, disposable one at your destination. I’ve gone thru security with things I shouldn’t have had, like a too-large tube of shaving creme (which was confiscated on my fourth/final time thru security on that trip).

One time I got stopped, they confiscated the Swiss Army Classic (the smallest version) but let me keep my scissors both of which were in my toiletries bag. Ummm, the blade on the scissors was about 2x as long as that on the Swiss Army knife. :smack:

Ouch! Couldn’t that cause severe internal bleeding?

Each airport is different- If you are checking your luggage- best to pack it all there- if you are going carry-on- no razors and remember that all liquids and creams and items like this belong in a quart size zip-lock type bag- check the threads for further information… as for me I usually will be able to buy razors at my landing location and just now try to keep everything small and simple for the security people not to get into a lather.

Don’t sweat it. I have probably gone through modern airport security 100 times (as a white male). I have never been searched.

FWIW, I have never heard modern cartridge-type or disposable razors referred to as ‘safety razors’. The only type I’ve heard referred to as ‘safety razors’ are the ones with the two-sided removable blade.
