Can I cook dry beans in a steamer?

I have a one-pound bag each of black beans and pinto beans. I would like to cook them easily, uniformly and correctly… can I do this in a steamer? How much water do I put in and for how long? The instruction manual doesn’t list a time for beans, but it cooks rice and vegetables just dandy. Can I make beans in it, too?

I don’t know for sure, but I would think that you could never get enough moisture into the beans with steam.

There’s a good basic bean tutorial on the Rancho Gordo site: http://ranchogordo.com/html/rg_cook_beans_primer.htm

Just a guess, but if you soaked them overnight (I know you said dry, but…) then steamed them they might cook tender. If you try this let us know the results.

Dry, probably not, but what Jake said.

My favorite black bean recipe, except I leave out the sherry because it’s gross and add whatever other flavors sound good to me, like a pork bone or a few cloves of garlic. The beans come out perfectly every time and are very flavorful.
