I have always loved microbiology, but i’m doing a B.S. in chemistry instead because I figure it’ll offer more job options in the real world. However there is only about 30 credit hours of difference between the two majors (B.S. in chemistry vs. B.S. in microbiology) so maybe i’ll double major. Since I want to graduate in may 2007 I could just do a B.A. in microbiology, but I really don’t know what I could do with a B.S., let alone a B.A… I’d mainly just be doing it because I like the subject.
For the record I am not a super student, I am pretty mediocre (30-70th percent of the class) so graduate school in either program isn’t really realistic.
My BS in in microbiology. I’m working right now in a clinical genetic lab, though my plan is to eventually go on to get a PhD. If I were planning to do what I’m doing now my whole life, I’d tell my younger self to get a Medical Technologist degree.
In biology, a BS is really equivalent to a high school diploma in other fields. It’ll get you in the door, but with just a BS, you don’t qualift for much beyond pretty menial, entry-level jobs. If you really want to do much with it, you’ll need a PhD. Even a master’s isn’t worth a whole lot, in my experience.
Yeah that is my fear. I guess i’ll just take a few classes for fun instead.
Could you picture yourself as a high school science teacher? With some add work to get a teaching credential, you’d be qualified for that. Qualified science teachers are hard to get, which would probably be reflected in the offers you’d get.
