Can I insure a suitcase?

I’m switching coasts, and I’m moving all my stuff in suitcases (two flights).

On my second trip, I’ll have a suitcase full of my computer stuff (luckily, my main computer is the very compact Mac Mini). It might have $2000 worth of stuff in it. Is there any way for me to insure it, just in case the airline loses it or breaks something?

All my stuff is in its original packaging, with styrofoam, etc, so it’ll at least have a fighting chance. But I’d feel better if I could insure it.

I don’t really have time for a cite proving this, but I believe you are automatically insured when you check in your luggage. It is probably a bitch getting your money, but you are insured.

For clothes only basically. Trust me as the person who have may have set a world record for luggage lost most times by the airlines (7 and they say the odds are astronomically against it happening even once!). They don’t cover electronics or books or basically anything else and the total limit is something like $1500 depending on the airline. That type of insurance is intriguing to me for obvious reasons but I can’t think of anything that would cover it. Homeowners or maybe some types of renters insurance would be the closest.

Go to your airline’s web site, where they will have posted their baggage limits and insurability information.

You may be better off to ship your more valuable items via UPS or FedEx and make sure they are properly insured.

If you pay for the airline ticket with a credit card, you may get additional insurance.

You can buy travel insurance that includes lost luggage insurance, but it might be overkill for one flight with only $2000 worth of stuff. Check if your renters’ insurance, if you have it, covers property in transit.

Check out the possibility of shipping it air freight. You should be able to declare a value and buy insurance.
