Should I be worried about putting a DVD player in my checked-in airline luggage?

It’s too big to carry on.

It’s going to be in its original box, with the original packing, and its going to have some of my clothes around it.

My suitcase doesn’t have a hard shell though, which worries me.

Mostly, it’s going to be the original packing protecting it. Is this enough to survive airline baggage handling?

The big issue will be theft, not motion damage. Assume that it will be stolen and plan accordingly.

I’m really only concerned about damage at this point.

About 6 months ago I checked a DVD player. It was in its original packing, and I put it inside a duffel bag so that it wasn’t obvious what it was.

It arrived in perfect condition.

Of course, the DVD player had been sent from Amazon.com in the same packing, so if it survived that trip I don’t see why it wouldn’t survive my plane trip.

If it’s in the original box & packing I don’t think there’s too much to worry about. I don’t think sending it thru airline baggage is any harser than shipping it thru the mail.

suranyi, did Amazon send it you in just the factory packing, i.e. from Sony or whatever, or did they also put an Amazon box around it?

It was just the Toshiba box with a packing label attached to it.

Ed

I meant “SHIPPING label”, of course.

I wouldn’t check anything that couldn’t live without if broken, and I wouldn’t carry anything on that I couldn’t live without if confiscated by some slope-browed screener. I’ve made both mistakes.

I’d suggest you mail it. Strange as it may seem, it is probably just a bit safer. I’d go for the insurance just the same.

Thanks Ed.

I certainly can live without it, it’s just a 100 dollar model I’m giving as an xmas gift. If I have to, I can get another when at the destination, although it will be a bit after Christmas. If it’s only a bit safer shipping, I’ll check it in. My suitcase will give some added protection in addition to the manufacturer’s packing.
