I have a bunch of short AVI files from a beach trip. I only want one frame of several to make into photographs. Does anyone have an idea of how to do it? I have a mac, running 10.4.8 and I use iPhoto for photos. My mac uses QuickTime to show AVI files. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks muchly
You can take a screencap of the frame you want. I am not sure how well this would come out as a print though; the resolution might not be high enough for printing.
I case you don’t know - cmd-shift-3 is screen capture.
Hmm…I have Photoshop Elements 2, running on Windows XP.
If I go to File>Import>Frame from Video, I’ll get a window allowing me to browse among the various types of movie files on my drives.
I select a file, and it plays on a screen in the window. I can start and stop the image at will, and move back and forward. I can select any frame to open in Photoshop. I can then do anything I normally would with any PS file, including printing.
The resolution isn’t that great, but that may be due to the quality of the files I’m working with, YMMV.
Does that help? I know nothing about iPhoto, but perhaps it has a similar feature.
The resolution of video files is far less than a still image from a digital camera. Even 1080p HD is only 1920x1280, which is 2.5 megapixels, compared to 2560x1920 for an image from a relatively common 5 megapixel camera. Videos from a standard digital camera won’t be any larger than 640x480, and may even be as low as 320x240. You won’t get decent prints at that resolution. The largest good quality print (300 dpi) from a 640x480 is 2.1x1.6".
The free, open-source VideoLAN - VLC media player, which is available for various operating systems, has a feature that allows you to take a snapshot of any frame of any avi or just about any other container/format media file. There’s a version for MacOS X.
I rather like VLC, and I use it quite often.
Oh thank you , thank you. I haven’t tried it yet but that sounds like it will work fine. I’ll check in after I figure out how to do it.
Thank you again!
