Can I substitute Fabric Felt for Craft Felt?

I got a tiny little project and need a small 8x10 sheet of craft felt. The packages on amazon have 50 sheets! I need one sheet the rest would get trashed because I’m not giving that package of felt a home in my drawer for 40 years.

My local fabric center has sewing felt. Can I substitute that?

50 sheets! You’re insane. No way jack.

Heck, most project use a tiny bit of felt. Usually to keep a raw wood edge from scratching the counters. Never need much at all.

Depends on the project. In my experience, the difference is that craft felt is stiff (those 8x10 sheets stay rigid when you pick 'em up, almost like flimsy cardboard). Fabric felt isn’t. Craft felt is also often available with an adhesive backing.

If you’re going to be cutting shapes and gluing them down, fabric might work fine.

Do you have a Hobby Lobby / Michael’s / JoAnne Fabrics type place near you? They usually sell craft felt for ~50 cents a sheet. Usually sold where the “kid’s craft kit” stuff is. Often with the option of adhesive backing.

I have a Hobby Lobby. I was hoping to avoid the Christmas crowds. But, if they sell sheets of felt than that’s what I need.

I have a ceramic tray that I want to use for keys, loose change etc. They could chip or crack the ceramic. I want to cut three strips of felt and hot glue them into a single three-layer pad. Then just lay it into the bottom of the ceramic tray.

It would be better to use stiffer felt. I’d worry about it curling up otherwise.

Yes, it’s the same thing (I run a fabric and craft store, if you need credentials  ). The sheets are just precut for convenience. If you local fabric center has crafts as well, or you are near a shop that does, the probably sell the little 8"x10" sheets singly as well, near children’s supplies such as pipe cleaners and pompoms. They run about a quarter a piece.
