Can I Transplant North American Lotus to My Pool?

I have a garden pol, and I would like to have lotus flowers in it. I noticed these plants growing along the banks of a nearby river. Can I just dig up the roots and plant them in my pool?
Another question: if I plant seeds, will I get flowers this summer?
I have had no luck with tropical lotus plants-they either do not grow, or don’t flower at all. The N American variety seems very hardy, and produces nice flowers.

It’s my understanding they’re a protected species. I would check first.

You didn’t make it clear if you wanted to know if you could legally do this or if you wanted growing instructions.

I also believe they are a federal protected species.

Harvesting anything but fruit and nuts from a public property is illegal in any case, with that also being illegal in certain circumstances.

You can move or destroy protected species on your own property.

Some nurseries sell the plants and should be able to tell you the growing requirements. I suggest you go to a forum about water gardens to get detailed advice.
