I’m coming home from Taiwan for four months. My phone here, in Taiwan, is a Motorola Razr. Can I bring it home and get some sort of temporary plan to use it while I’m there? I’m certainly not going to use my Taiwanese plan, being charged for calls from Taiwan every time I use it.
Where’s home? Assuming you’re talking about the US, I think you’d be better off doing what we do when we go back to the States, which is get a cheap prepaid phone like this to use while you’re there. I think we paid $10 for the phone and another $10 on minutes when we were home for about a month. Most cell companies want you to sign a long term contract that costs a lot to cancel.
razr basically refers to the shape of the phone. Moto makes razr phones for most air interface standards. You can probably use your phone on t-mobile or AT&T as they are gsm networks. It may be expensive. You should probably contact your service provider in Taiwan about roaming to the states. They most likely have a partner in the US. I know the big US cell phone companies have agreements with companies in other countries.
Home is in the states. Sorry I didn’t mention that…
I’ll check out both the prepaid and the US partners for my carrier…
Speak to your cellphone provider. They may have agreements with American providers where the users of each can use their phones normally within each other’s boundaries. International calls will still be expensive, of course.
Is your phone a GSM phone? If so, make sure it is unlocked and then just buy a local sim card. You can get one from ATT Wireless and T-mobile. My dad did that when he visited from abroad and I did that when I went to Turkey. You can get a prepaid card and just add minutes as needed.
