Can I watch TV through my monitor?

Just wondering if its possible. I’ve seen LED monitors with this capability but I’m not sure if its possible with a normal run of the mill one. I would like a TV in my room, but don’t have any room to put one, so running TV through my monitor would seem like a good comprimise. My video card has an S-Video connection and I’m not overly concerned about picture quality if thats an issue. So, SDMB can you help me out?

You would need a specific TV-card to do this. It’s not standard on most graphic cards. The connector you have is probably for TV-out.

what GreyWanderer said.

TV Cards are pretty inexpensive. on order of 70 bucks or so ?

theres good info there. this is an add on question though but what all tv shows can you get with a tv card? Can you just get your normal input (satellite, cable, antenna) or are there internet specific tv shows and programs you can pick up?

ie, do cable and antenna channels transfer through the internet so you can pick them up via your tv card or can you only pick up shows from your normal analog cable and antenna hookups?

Normal TV-cards provide a S-Video in slot and a RCA to S-video convertor so anything you can plug into RCA/S-vid can be picked up with a TV-card. What that means is that pretty much anything you can feed into a TV, you can feed into your computer. However, Digital signals are going to have to go through a D-A and a A-D conversion and it might be better finding some way to keep it purely digital.

You could also get a stand-alone box that turns your monitor into a tv. I’m not vouching for it beause i haven’t used it, but i just saw one while shopping today. I couldn’t find the corporate page, so here’s a link from the store i saw it in: http://www.factorydirect.ca/cgi-bin/product_spec.pl/NU2389
