Can I work out opposite muscles?

Like working out biceps and then triceps. A teacher once told me I can’t because of something to do with blood flowing from one muscle to another. Then someone told me it was ok. So now I’m asking if someone knows for sure.

That’s nuts. Hell, isometric exercises work them out at the same time! Certainly, it’s best to give a particular muscle group a rest, but opposing muscle groups needs to be kept even. My workout, when I lifted weights, did my entire upper body (including biceps and triceps) on one day, and my lower body the next day. Opposing muscle groups galore.

Yes, it is OK to work opposing muscle groups on the same day (biceps and triceps, for example).

Sometimes, it’s a good thing to ‘superset’ by hitting the biceps and then immediately doing a set of tri’s…

There is generally good feedback from folks who do this, as it intensifies the workout, because you don’t rest between the sets that hit the opposing muscle groups, and a great ‘pump’ is reported, which is anecdotal evidence of good blood flow.

It’s something you can do to spice up your workout, if you are the type to focus on two body parts per day…it might be most relevant to toss in some super sets.

Bi’s and tri’s are naturals for this.

Actually, it’s supposed to better to work out opposing muscle groups on the same days to keep the body balanced. If, for example, you overwork chest (a common error), you can develop back problems.

There are no good reasons why you can’t, but there are no compelling reasons to do so. Find something that fits in with your goals and run with it.
