Can medical marijuana be to potent?

Anyone here from Colorado? I am and we have some badass weed. Some of it is so strong that I start to panic and get all worried and stuff. Like right now!:smack::p:D no…im ok.

Is there a question here?

You can’t overdose on marijuana, but you can hallucinate and do stupid things that could lead to injury. Please consider contacting someone trusted (and sober) to watch over you until the drugs wear off, and act more responsibly in the future.

I suppose it depends on what you mean by “too potent.”

It’s impossible to overdose on THC - you’d have to smoke a whole bale of it in one big drag to risk overdose (or so I’ve heard).

It is possible to smoke so much that you get paranoid and freak out, but that’s the problem of the user, not the pot itself. Different people react differently to pot. Colorado dispensaries sell these things called “Rookie Cookies” that are very low-dose edibles designed for beginners.

THC doesn’t appear to be the prime component in it’s anti-seizure medical uses. Based on most of the legal sales focusing on high THC content, most legal pot has far more intoxicating side effect than needed because it’s too potent.

For some of the medical effects that seem to be based on THC it really just comes down to whether someone can regulate dosing. High THC content may make it easier to get needed dosing for the medical effects sought with lower consumption but might make it hard to get just enough without getting unneeded (and possibly unwanted) effects. After all the goal of medical usage isn’t being so baked you can’t proceed with your life it’s managing the negative effects of the medical problems. More stoned != more medically beneficial.

[The Dude]Well that’s just like, your opinion, man.[/The Dude]

Every medicine can be too strong. If something has medical effects, it’ll also have side effects. This is all the more true for herbal medicines like so-called “medical marijuana”, as they’re poorly studied and poorly controlled.

The biggest risk for ‘overdosing’ on marijuana is edibles. Imagine a drinking contest at a frat. If you use beer, everyone will puke and pass out before long. If you use hard liquor, you can get a lethal dose inside you before you feel too drunk. The same goes for THC infused edibles. It takes about 90 minutes before you’re really feeling the effects. If you eat edibles until you feel high, you’re going to have an unpleasant experience. Hallucinations are possible, but the main symptom is violent vomiting. Ask the staff at the shop what their recommendations are.

I can vouch for this via personal experience. Had been years (as in decades) since I smoked and I was offered three small cookies. Seriously, they were bite-sized. I ate two of them, declined the third.

I had zero tolerance for THC and puked till I tasted my morning coffee, lasted for about 6 hours. It was as unpleasant an experience as I can ever remember. For this reason, I think edibles should be very highly controlled.

Nice Lebowski quote. I lol’d.

Possibly relevant:

"As many as a quarter of new cases of psychotic mental illness can be blamed on super-strength strains of cannabis, scientists will warn this week.

The potent form of the drug–known as ‘skunk’–is so powerful that users are three times more likely to have a psychotic episode than those who have never tried it.

The study, leaked to The Mail on Sunday, will reignite debate around Britain’s drug laws–and will add weight to calls for a tougher stance towards those caught dealing or in possession of cannabis."

As a general rule, I think it’s safe to say that any scientific study “leaked” to the Mail before its actual publication is pure hokum.

You hit the nail on the head, Chronos. Heck, anything can be too potent!

Different strains have different effects here. Maybe it was just that strain that got me.Im far from rookie status but this pot threw me for a loop. Thanks for the feedback everyone!

Supposedly strains high in CBD can counteract some of the negative effects of THC like paranoia and anxiety.

The dispensary staff can usually give excellent advice along these lines.

Cool. So if someone gets anxiety from taking weed, what would be a good way to avoid that?

Does weed that is almost all CBD with little THC still provide a decent high? What ratio is good for someone with anxiety issues?

Ask the staff as to what’s best. I got some CBD heavy strains when I hurt my back. It basically relaxed me, eased the pain and put me to sleep. I’ve never had issues with paranoia, so, I can’t speak to that.

Yeah, all anecdotal too.

Fair enough, go ahead and contact them directly and judge the quality of the advice for yourself.
