Can roaches walk backwards?

A story from a Florida snowbird tells of a guy whose hearing was gradually lost. He chocked it up to old age…until a doctor found that a cockroach had entered the ear and was unable to back out.
Aside from the fact that the story is a gross-out, it does raise one question…
…can these bugs that nothing can kill, these Ultimate Survivors, not even walk backwards?? Seems like a pretty serious weakness. Cockroach extermination could take a quantum jump forward!

Well, the ear canal has lots of curves, perhaps it just couldn’t manuvoer around them backwards?

Still, that does sound suspiciously like an urban legend. The man didn’t feel the sensation of a large bug crawling around in what is a rather sensitive area? And what did the cockroach eat? (I mean, I can’t really see too much nutritional value in ear wax)

(and what do you mean “that nothing can kill”? I find a good hard Stomp works pretty well…)

Ya’ ever see one backup? I haven’t. We need data.

Maybe it’s a situation similar to that of humans driving cars in reverse, i.e., they can, but only a few (in the case of humans, say, cops, cabbies and truck drivers) are any good at it.

Apparently this dude was a heavy drinker; thus a sound sleeper.
Could be the roach couldn’t handle the curves, like most drivers. But they’re born with these instincts! Never saw a roach with an A-class licence
As for unkillable, I refer to the entire species. They’re supposed to be the only things left on Earth after asteroid strikes or nuclear war or a Gore presidency, y’know, megadisasters like that. Individually they react well to a fast stomp. As Homer Simpson said…“Stupid bug! You go squish now!”
