Can small ants (1/16-inch) get through a typical "child-proof" bottle-cap?

This morning I noticed a closed bottle of listerine, with some listerine left inside, with about a dozen small (roughly 1/16-inch-long, I think) ants swarming over it. Would they be able to squeeze through the “child-proof” bottle cap?

Not if the Listerine can’t. IOW, watertight implies ant-tight.

I’d agree. However, it is possible to partially close a cap - enough to get the childproofing engaged, but not enough to fully close it. I suppose an ant might get through if that was the case.

I’d be more inclined to think the ants got in before the bottle was closed.

i don’t see anywhere in the OP that there were any ants actually “in” the bottle.

but if they did get in, they didn’t do it when the bottle was properly closed.

There is plenty of splashage on the bottle to interest the ants. The alchohol would evaporate, but it doesn’t take much of the sweet bit to attract the attention of a micro sized ant.

No, the ants were not “in” the listerine bottle; rather, they were on the outside, no doubt seeking an entrance.

There was not very much fluid left in the bottle, either. It did seem securely closed, from what I could tell – I did not particularly want to touch it, as I thought that perhaps a homeless wino had left it there (just speculating, though).
