Can somebody explain what's going on with Mallard Fillmore this week?

In particular, the strips from 12-28-11and 12-29-11.

I know I shouldn’t let myself be upset by this stupid strip but my paper prints it right next to Doonesbury and there’s no way I can avoid it. In any case, the strips from the last few days are about some sort of “epidemic of pedophilia” in Hollywood that’s apparently larger than anything that went on at Penn State and I don’t know exactly what these strips are talking about. I haven’t heard anything about any type of recent Hollywood pedophilia scandal and the incidents that I do know about (e.g., Roman Polanski) happened years–if not decades–ago and involved only a few people. Has there been some new story that’s broken within the last couple months that I’ve completely missed?

Sometimes I’m convinced right-wingers live in their own little universe.

Ya gotta remember…Bruce Tinsley is the Rush Limbaugh of the funny pages. He doesn’t have to make sense, or verify anything he says. Just saying it is enough, and masses lap it up thinking it’s serious editorializing.

As to what (if anything) he’s actually referrencing in these strips, I’m as confused as you are.
SS

A little googling brought me to Corey Feldman saying that pedophilia is the number one problem in Hollywood and that’s why the other Corey died last August.

This looks like what what the duck Mallard is talking about.

I googled the headline that Mallard’s paper displays, and found a blog (Brian’s Right Perspective) with the same headline and a brief story that does not actually back up the allegations in the headline.

The byline on the story shows that he is reprinting an article from Fox News headlined "Recent Charges of Sexual Abuse of Children in Hollywood Just Tip of Iceberg, Experts Say, although there seems to be only 1 recent criminal charge that’s actually from Hollywood. That charge involves Martin Weiss.

The other (yes, there are only 2 criminal charges in the article) involves a composer (Fernando Rivas) who lives in South Carolina; Rivas wrote songs and composed music for many people, including Cyndi Lauper, Gloria Estefan and Sesame Street.

The article then goes on to recount anecdotes and allegations from Alison Angrim (she played Nellie on Little House On The Prairie) about sexual abuse 2 other child stars from the 1980s claim to have suffered.

There really is only one expert quoted, and she isn’t talking about Hollywood being a veritable Sodom & Gomorrah, she’s talking about the problem of child sexual abuse being something that happens all over the world. I guess we can acknowledge Arngrim as an expert because of her position on a charity organization called PROTECT that has something to do with raising awareness of child abuse.

In other words, yes, there was a recent criminal charge in Hollywood, and 2 people talked about. In large part, tho, Fox News is just trolling again.

Just meant to discredit and demonize the “liberal Hollywood elite.”

I think it’s intended to distract from the Penn State “Joepa” situation. For some reason right wingers are finding the whole thing really uncomfortable, and are flailing about looking for ways to deflect, distract, and diffuse blame.

Going back to November 30 and working forward, I haven’t found any laughs, but I do find it interesting that Tinsley has Mallard offering “Holiday Tips”, just like any meek casualty in the War on Christmas, which he alluded to on December 11th and 24th.

Well, he wouldn’t want to offend anyone.

OKay, now I know what those strips were referencing. Thanks.

I figured that from the beginning. I just couldn’t identify the news items upon which the attack was based.

You guys are over-analyzing this. It’s just your standard, wholesome newspaper comic strip about pedophilia.

We already have Family Circus for that.

If you do, let me know. I’ve been looking in on occasion since around 1994 and haven’t found one yet.

This is ridiculous. I’m as right-wing as they come and I assure you what makes me “uncomfortable” is that a pedophile was able to get away with so much for so long–and was able to walk around free after posting bail. Right-wingers have no reason to “deflect, distract, and diffuse blame” from the people who deserve it. We’re all about law and order and punishing sin, remember? No one in my circle would dream of defending pedophiles or those who cover it up.

Penn State fans on the other hand…well, they throw support rallies.

Nittany Lions are left wingers :eek:

It has nothing to do with left wing / right wing, but how far one has been indoctrinated into the cult of Joe-Pa.

Actually, I don’t get the impression Tinsley particularly cares about JoePa or Penn State. He just sees something scandalous is getting news coverage, and wants to use it to take a shot at his favourite target - liberals. It could be a pedophile scandal about a hockey team - “but liberals do it too!” - or a corporation - “but liberals do it too!” - or a travelling family of acrobats - “but liberals do it too!”

If next month there’s a completely unrelated city corruption scandal about parking tickets that lasts through a few weeks of news cycles (because juicy details keep emerging), I can picture Tinsley (who strikes me as a particularly lazy writer) trying to work in a liberal-bash there, as well.

Tinsley went through 8 years of Bush and Cheney, and found absolutely nothing funny to write about. Not even when Cheney shot his friend in the face. Oh, except for when Bush proposed something reasonable about immigration. Not funny even then, but not worshipful.

I bet it also has something to do with defending the church.

While I’m sure there are abusers in Hollywood (and its South Carolina suburbs) the statement about sets being conducive to pedophiles is just nonsense. Where is a kid safer - alone with a trusted priest or coach or on a set with a zillion people standing around?

Fact is, since the Twilight Zone Movie fiasco, parents are always allowed on the set at all times. The only time we weren’t with our daughter during any of her acting was during auditions and agent interviews. And while no doubt kids who have made it feel pressure to keep at it (like any of us making money) the audition process is designed to weed out kids there only because their parents want them to be there.
It isn’t perfectly safe, but it is relatively safe.

BTW, what is with the “mind control” reference in the first link about the story?

Likely coupled with an accusation that the media is deliberately ignoring the story.

Actually Tinsley did do at least one strip about the Cheney hunting accident. However, as might be expected, it was one condemning the media and “liberal” comedians for continuing to make jokes about it and not letting the story die.
