Can someone explain how Disney has outmanuevered DeSantis via Charles III's descendants?

A couple more questions… Is there any reason that one of these clauses couldn’t just name “the entire current human population of Planet Earth” as their class?

And is there any benefit to using the current monarch, rather than, say, Elizabeth II, or George VI?

Oh, and one more question: Does this now make Lilibet an Official Disney Princess?

For the first issue, you’d need to have the members of the class known and identifiable. For the second, it keeps the set small enough to be manageable (though varied enough to be useful); I also think it has to be a person now living, which E II & G VI aren’t.

Charles III is not himself a member of the class “the descendants now living of Charles III”; he is not his own descendant.

The class does not have to be defined by reference to a person now living; it just has to only include persons who are now living. When Elizabeth II came to the throne in 1952 the class of her descendants was just two people, and the class of the descendants of her predecessor George VI, was just four people. And the class of the descendants of his predecessor, Edward VIII, had no members at all. So then, and for many years afterwards, the typical royal lives clause referred to the descendants of George V, who had died in 1936.

IIRC the new and current Reedy Creek board still has control over roads so I expect they will find a way to wreck the roads to Disney World.

Sounds crazy but that is what republicans do (enact punitive measures against those who displease them…never mind if it makes any sense…punishment is the goal).

Here in England, I’m not a great supporter of our Royal family.
However if it irritates Santis … long live the King!

I was waiting for this. Here is a good explanation:

So another 11th hour agreement, this one involving a subsidiary-owned utility plant.

Sorry if this has been covered. Has Disney made any sort of “We may need to reconsider our Florida footprint, given the hostile environment, and see if there’s another state less petty and dictatorial” statement?

To be clear, no one with any financial savvy thinks it remotely feasible that Disney picks up DW and moves. But as the state’s largest employer, financial engine and taxpayer, wouldn’t a little saber rattling make the general populace nervous? Nervous enough to start a grassroots “knock it the @#$& off” campaign?

For example, could Disney suggest they’re exploring moving any job that could possible be done remotely (lots and lots that don’t fit this bill, of course) to a different state? If Florida residents thought 10% of jobs (a percentage I made up) would be relocated, and any remaining jobs reevaluated, isn’t that “storm the capitol” territory?

You assume that they’d blame the governor instead of “woke Disney”…

Once you take money out of their pockets and bread off their tables (or threaten to), yeah.

ETA: And I have enormous confidence in Disney’s marketing acumen and ability to shape the message. “We were happy, you were happy, everyone was happy, until Governor Dickhead decided to piss in the punch bowl.”

I think (solidly IMHO) that Disney is planning/hoping that they can outlast DeSantis. Especially if such individual gets wounded in a battle with TFG for Pres, or even if DeSantis ends up in the WH, he’ll no longer be in direct control of Florida, giving them a shot at getting a much more understanding executive.

Whether it works that way or not, we’ll have to see.

You may be right. It just seems that being the largest employer, the biggest tax source, and the single biggest product inducing dollars to flow into the state is a tremendous card to play.

And don’t forget that this specific large employer happens to be the world’s greatest experts in messaging. As I said in one of the other threads, Disney is not who I would want as an enemy.

Disney has plans to move ~2k employees from CA to FL. AFAIK it was paused a couple of times, but they are moving forward now. It’s a lot easier to threaten not to move employees in than it is to threaten to move them out. If they are not even making that threat, they probably are planning on outlasting the DeSantis.

Besides there is probably something hidden away in the Disney corporate edicts that they can’t move Walt’s frozen head.

I think if they began to loudly look at other options move say 25% of their cruises sailing out of Port Canaveral that could get a serious reaction from the local populace. Particularly if an “anonymous source” let it leak to the media they were in talks with the port of Savannah, GA or somewhere like that to allow the cruise ships.

They would never take this action for a host of reasons but it would no doubt turn up the heat on good old Ronnie’s ass.

Point being: The Disney PR machine will easily defeat the DeSantis PR machine.

What I’m wondering is what will happen to Florida’s no personal income tax if Disney wangles things so that the money they owe in taxes drops precipitously.

I’ve heard that the (Republican) government of North Carolina has made moves to try to lure Disney to move to their state. I mean, really, what state (with sane leadership) wouldn’t want a money-making machine like Disney in their borders?

They know they can outlast him - he won’t be eligible to run for Governor in ‘26, because of Florida law that restricts the officeholder to at most 8 years during any 12 year period (he could come back only after sitting out the next term).

Nitpick: Publix (a grocery store chain) is Florida’s largest employer.

Of course, Disney is no chump, with about 75,000 employees.

Good for LegalEagle to find a solid reason to have “DisneyWorld trip” as a write off expense on next year’s tax filing.

Edit: Land

It might depend on whether you count by number of employees or by total wages-- Most grocery store employees aren’t paid much. Well, OK, most Disney employees probably aren’t paid much, either, but a few of them are paid a VERY large amount.
