My computer has been running super slow the past three days. I went to see if there were some old programs I could get rid of in the hope that it would clear up the problem, but I don’t know what they are or if I need them.
Could you please explain what they are to me ?
Date manager
Live reg
Live update
Netscape Communitation 4.50
Prescision Time
Do you have Norton Antivirus installed? Live Update sounds like a component of that, that automatically updates virus definitions. Keep that.
Running slow can be caused by a host of things. What types of programs are you running when you notice it’s slow? One thing that could cause that is spyware installed on your computer, but your list doesn’t seem to include any that I know of.
How did you compile your list?
If this is a Windows 95/NT/2K/XP system, try clicking Start then Run then type in MSINFO32. Then click on the plus sign at Software Environment, then Running Tasks. That is the list that shows you everything that’s actually running.
Lots of people on the board know more than me about this stuff and I think you’ll get better responses if you provide more information. You have to at least tell us what computer and what operating system you’re using. Best of luck.
Date manager - This is a built in Microsoft utility. It always runs in the background. It keeps track of the date and time on your computer. This is hooked into the BIOS, which is connected to the tiny crystal on your motherboard. If you have a newer OS, like XP, then it has added capabilities to schedule appointments and set reminders for important dates. I don’t believe it can, or should, be removed.
Live reg - Part of the Symantec family of virus protection, bundled with Norton. This particular program is what you used to register your copy of this software. Since this is used as proof to Norton that you deserve periodic updates of the virus definitions, it should not be removed.
Live update - Same here, part of the Symantec family of virus protection. This schedules your periodic virus definition updates, automatically installs the updates, and keeps your computer up to date, virus protection wise. These programs routinely slow down your computer because they are constantly monitoring in the background.
Netscape Communitation 4.50 - Are you sure you don’t mean Netscape Navigator, the Internet browser? If it really is Netscape Communicator, then it sounds like some sort of Instant Messaging program. I hate these, and always get rid of them. They are not worth the risk that they put your computer and sensitive information to. If it is Netscape Navigator, then that is an Internet browser. You probably already have and use Internet Explorer, so the Netscape Navigator can be removed.
Prescision Time - Sounds like some sort of Freeware or Shareware. I had a similar program that would synchronize my system clock with the atomic clock out in Colorado every day. It isn’t necessary, so it can be removed.
Precision Time is the culprit. It looks like just a computer clock management tool, but it comes along with Gator, which is a nasty, stupid, ad program.
Get rid of Precision Time by going to Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs. No problem. But Gator, the ad software, is still there.
Download AdAware. This program will clean your computer of intrusive ad/spy programs like Gator.
All the other programs are OK. The two Live programs are Norton Antivirus update programs. Leave them alone. Netscape 4.5 isn’t bad, but REALLY old. If you’re not using it, uninstall it to free up space. If you’re using it, upgrade to another browser. I recommend Mozilla 1.4.
