I really like Oprah.
I like the fact that she has the courage to share her struggles and failures publicly. I think that’s why her brand is respected, we all know about her ups AND downs.
Such as the problem with abuse at her school in Africa, which she most definitely took seriously and handled promptly. You guys who are saying she didn’t act or care are lying.
Oprah started out somewhat like Jerry Springer, but then decided to do something more. She could’ve taken an easier path and just made money, like most of us do. There are plenty of people who manufacture, market and sell crap that we don’t need and isn’t good for us.
That is why some people enjoy Oprah, because she is trying to do something worthwhile and she is sharing her journey, flaws and all.
Other people follow her because they just need someone to follow. That isn’t her fault.
I’ve attended tapings of her show twice, and spoke to her very briefly at one of them. She is not as warm in person - it’s interesting how much charisma she has on television versus in real life. Watching at home you’d swear she’s another girlfriend. Not so in person.
BUT, she is brilliant. That woman knows everything that’s happening with her show, every cue, every detail.

fessie, I agree with everything you’ve said here. I’m not that into her show…but it’s just not my type of thing…but I admire her for always trying to do the right thing, and not pandering to the lowest common denominator the way some do. These days, her show is like an oasis of good, decent television in a sea of pathetic crap (during the day, anyway).
And, I am so impressed with people who are self-made. She came from nothing, but has talent, brains, and drive, and look what she has accomplished. It’s extraordinary!
I have never been to a show taping, but I have heard her criticized for what you say about being less warm & friendly than she is on the air. I figure that part of that is because of the fact that she is working…she is probably very focused on the show & what she is doing during that time, and therefore doesn’t come across so “best girlfriend” like she does when on camera. Makes me wonder what she’s like IRL…A lot of us have different personas at work vs. at home, with family vs. with friends, etc.
