Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I guess she doesn’t crave attention after all. :dubious:
Well you clearly are or you wouldn’t have quoted Bible passages taking her to task for talking about her charity work.
Yeah because everyone in this thread saying the OP and others are being dumb for bitching about her are starry eyed. Personally I’m a cold son of a bitch and don’t give a damn if she gives her money or hordes it away. I’m just stunned by the people pissed off she gives money away and they somehow found out about it.
Well if you’re not buying that’s great but why then do you know so much about it? As I said I never knew anything about her just by not watching her show.
Perhaps I’m just cranky for having to get up so early to go to work. Speaking of which time to go.
What you worry?
Good for you! More people need to be less decieved by billionaires who choose to give money away to charity!
Oprah is clearly a wealthy bitch trying to buy poor people. Gates is a man- attention-whore who had to decide if he wanted to flush his his money or give it away.
It should be CLEAR to the masses that the wealthy only give money away when they are EVIL!
It is of course a matter of law that the wealthy are ABSOLUTELY OBLIGATED to giving away LOTS of their money. Making money for yourself and then giving to charity is just plain MEAN!
If I happen to come into 200 mill tomorrow I absolutely will give lots away. Will I want my name known? You know I think I would want people to know that I had given money away…it may make other people feel like giving too.
Now that you mention it, when I saw her jumping up and down shrieking “New cars for everybody! New cars for everybody!” I thought to myself, “Self, why don’t you get online and donate $50 to Greenpeace?”
And so I did.
My bad.
I admire Oprah.
She bought the esteem of her fellow man on the cheap, and burnished the Oprah Brand along the way.
Oh, and she helped the poor too.
Stroke of Genius.
Maybe she could have an “Apprentice” type show where the homeless win fur coats and subscriptions to “O”.
Why would she though? Poor wig guy spoiled that idea.
Greenpeace thanks you for your $5 though. They only thank you because it annoys Oprah though (she has a deal with them, for every dollar another charity gets she gets to WIN).
I hear she has a hit out on me because I give to charities she didn’t suggest.
I really like Oprah.
I like the fact that she has the courage to share her struggles and failures publicly. I think that’s why her brand is respected, we all know about her ups AND downs.
Such as the problem with abuse at her school in Africa, which she most definitely took seriously and handled promptly. You guys who are saying she didn’t act or care are lying.
Oprah started out somewhat like Jerry Springer, but then decided to do something more. She could’ve taken an easier path and just made money, like most of us do. There are plenty of people who manufacture, market and sell crap that we don’t need and isn’t good for us.
That is why some people enjoy Oprah, because she is trying to do something worthwhile and she is sharing her journey, flaws and all.
Other people follow her because they just need someone to follow. That isn’t her fault.
I’ve attended tapings of her show twice, and spoke to her very briefly at one of them. She is not as warm in person - it’s interesting how much charisma she has on television versus in real life. Watching at home you’d swear she’s another girlfriend. Not so in person.
BUT, she is brilliant. That woman knows everything that’s happening with her show, every cue, every detail.
…
Yea, you’re right.
And I remember what he did to his friend Martha Stewart when she dared to breath the same air he did. He trashed her and her competing show.
Oprah would do well to steer clear of The Donald.
fessie, I agree with everything you’ve said here. I’m not that into her show…but it’s just not my type of thing…but I admire her for always trying to do the right thing, and not pandering to the lowest common denominator the way some do. These days, her show is like an oasis of good, decent television in a sea of pathetic crap (during the day, anyway).
And, I am so impressed with people who are self-made. She came from nothing, but has talent, brains, and drive, and look what she has accomplished. It’s extraordinary!
I have never been to a show taping, but I have heard her criticized for what you say about being less warm & friendly than she is on the air. I figure that part of that is because of the fact that she is working…she is probably very focused on the show & what she is doing during that time, and therefore doesn’t come across so “best girlfriend” like she does when on camera. Makes me wonder what she’s like IRL…A lot of us have different personas at work vs. at home, with family vs. with friends, etc.
What are you talking about? Donald Trump produced Martha’s show. It failed because of poor ratings.
Before this thread, the only thing I knew about Oprah is that she hosted the most popular daytime TV program, and that it tended to focus on positive content, rather than the negative; that, and the fact that her book recommendations are extremely powerful.
From this thread, I must conclude that if every rich person were as devoted to their philanthropic projects as Oprah is, the world would be a better place. I don’t doubt that she has a mighty ego, but that seems an acceptable price to pay.
I don’t really have a problem with Oprah. I don’t think much of her book club selections, but that’s a difference in literary taste.
Her fans, though, they terrify me.
SEEEE!
She IS the NEW MESSIAH!!!
Is Trump just too easy to Pit or something? I’m not a huge Oprah fan, but I don’t consider highlighting women’s health problems or promoting reading that horrible.
But it’s only 2% of her income. Lynch the bitch, I say.
Really, folks. Oprah came from almost nothing, used her smarts, personality and wits to pull herself up by her bootstraps and achieved success in a capitalist society. She also tries to do some good in this world and people think she’s a bitch? She’s achieved the American Dream as described in the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and every Frank Capra movie ever made. At the very least, I say people are jealous. At most, I’d say their hatred was . . . naw, I won’t go there.
Ooh go there, please. I’m bored today.
That’s part of the insidiousness that makes me wary - yes, she promotes reading, and I’m all for that, but she promotes the books SHE thinks you should read. It’s not her so much as her level of influence I’m not comfortable with. Is she promoting good things? I sure as hell hope so.
