Can someone please tell Oprah Winfrey she isn't God?

But I think her magazine is the only one ever that always has the same person on the cover. (Unless you count Mad Magazine, but that’s not really a person.)

Didn’t she start off as a TV talk show host, and then went into acting?

She did. Actually she started out as a TV news reporter and then became a local talk show host “People Are Talking” form the Baltimore are), then in acting.

You can say what you want about Oprah the TV demigoddess, but her performance in “The Color Purple” was quite powerful.

Martha Stewart Living (when a person is on the cover)
Rachael Ray’s magazine
Rosie O’Donnell’s magazine (now defunct)

And probably a few others that I can’t think of offhand. But it’s definitely not limited to Oprah.

If yaz don’t like Oprah? Don’t watch her show, don’t buy her magazine. If enough people stop loving Oprah, she’s toast.

It’s entirely up to “the public”.

I don’t watch her show, I don’t buy her magazine, but from my admittedly limited knowledge of the woman, I don’t think she’s Evil. Compared to, say, Dick Cheney, ( to name another famous rich person) Oprah seems to be quite a good woman.

Well, sure, she hasn’t shot anyone in the face yet (that we know of!)…

Heffalump, my turn-off moment for Oprah when I realized that her giant, economy-sized ego was getting in the way of what she was trying to do with a talk show. She gets fascinating, world-expert-in-their-fields guests on her show, and then proceeds to not let them barely open their mouths before she’s jumping in with her opinions. There is no doubt that SHE is the show, not the topic and the guests. It’s kind of sad, really - there’s not enough attention in the world for her.

I liked the show better when she featured transgendered Martians who don’t pay their taxes. I can’t get into the “finding your spirit” crap.

If the Oprah channel airs all of her old episodes, I’ll tune in.

What do you mean, Alfred E. Newman isn’t a real person?!?!?

is shocked

Well, I’ve seen some dudes who sure looked like him (Richie Cunningham comes to mind).

Yeah, I really don’t see the hate thing, other than to make oneself feel above the uncultured multitude. Your entire OP makes it clear that you have clearly fallen into the ever popular outrage without investigation trap.

Her picture is on the cover of the Magazine because the publishers insist on it, she has openly told her audience about the battle between them over this. She is trying to deliver her message “live your best life” (Oh, the horror, the horror) to the maximum number of people. And when she’s on the cover they sell more copies = reaches more people. A quick glance in the magazine reveals it is largely about her message, not about her. Of course you’d actually have to read, not just look at the pictures to determine that.

Why did she take it upon herself to be the deliverer of this message? Again, she has spoken openly and often about this very topic. As an illegitimate, black, female, born in the 50’s in the rural south, she managed to find her way to remarkable success. With success came thousands of letters every week wanting to know how’d she do that? She always believed, and it was easy for everyone to believe, if she could do it anyone could. Once she examined how she did it, she began to reach out to people. People responded to the message, now they wanted help with bad relationships, and weight issues, yada, yada.

She speaks frequently of the importance of reading and teachers so the book club thing was a no brainer. She got people reading who hadn’t read a book in years. Bitch!

Nelson Mandella doesn’t know anything about the school? What planet are you from? She has openly admitted she came up with the idea after a challenge from him. He was present and spoke when the school was opened, and often refers to it when interviewed.

It’s a boarding school because she wants the leadshipskills that are being learned to reach to all the corners of Africa one day. Why shouldn’t she dream big, she could change the face of tomorrows Africa.

One season she gave away $100,000 every Monday, to someone who was doing a great good with their life. People running afterschool programs on nickels and dimes, day cares, mentoring programs, you get the idea. Every Monday for a whole season. In all those gifts not one came back to bite her in the ass. Nobody turned out to be anything less than what was claimed. She has always made it her personal goal to be certain about such things, it’s just one of the reasons people trust her. Millions raised to build houses after Katrina, send kids to college, never, in all the years any dirt ever surfaced.

I am not a devotee, rarely catch the show, never buy the magazine and even I know she is none of the things you have claimed.

Give people a little credit, she has raved about movies we must see that bombed at the box office, her opinion does not mean ‘everything’ regardless of the media hype.

Colour me unimpressed with this OP.

Exactly.
Stores should only be named after wealthy egotistical white men.

Oprah, don’t smite me.

Can I add that for some inexplicable reason, I loath Rachel Ray. Moreso than Martha, and that is saying quite a lot. I have no idea why. I 've never watched her show or read any of her cooking books or magazine. It is like she was EVERY-FUCKING-WHERE all of a sudden.

That bugs me.
BOT, sorta,

How is it that men don’t have a magazine/TV thing like Oprah or Rachel or Martha?

Just curious.

She’s attempted to assasinate Jody Foster out of an obsessive love for Robert DeNiro ?

Cite?
:stuck_out_tongue:

Look, she’s put her money where her mouth is more than most folks any of us can cite. As was pointed out, there is no dirt on her. I think that in some sad and perverse way, it is this lack of dirt that angers people.

Which is quite sad.

I decided long ago that neither Merv Griffin nor Oprah Winfrey nor any sub-personality thereof was someone I would look to to tell me what to read, or watch, or buy, or believe. But none of that was because of her particular personality or her wealth or her politics or her background. It was because I just happened to have been brought up that way. I watched a lot of TV, but I had the advantage of watching it with the most sarcastic and skeptical crew imaginable – my family.

That said, when you’re judging OW’s contributions on the available evidence, the worst you can say is that she’s unwilling to, for PR reasons, abandon a charitable endeavor rather than do the hard, long, and thankless work of reforming it. And that ain’t a bad thing to say, at all.

There’s lots of things about OW I don’t like. Then again, there’s lots of people to like, and things I don’t like about them. Now that I think about it, it’s barely conceivable that someone, somewhere, doesn’t like me. Too bad for me, really.

Extremely impressive list.

And how do we know all this, including what’s in her will???

From Oprah!

  • 1"Be careful not to do your ‘acts of righteousness’ before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.
2"So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 3But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.*

There is no doubt that Oprah has helped many people. Yet, it appears that Oprah goes to great lengths to let us all know it.

*41Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. 42But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins,[j]worth only a fraction of a penny.[k]

43Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.”*

Forty million dollars for a school in Africa is real money, and certainly a treasure to these young girls. However, it represents somewhere around 2% of her net worth. Now I know she has given more, and will give much more before she dies. That’s admirable. But before we get too carried away, it is still a fraction of her total net worth.

Why does Oprah bring out the crazies? Reading this thread, and the ones linked to it, I can’t help but notice an abnormal amount of crazy. Earlier today someone posted about Oprah’s mind control powers. WTF? Is it just that’s she a popular celebrity, or is there more to it?

Emphasis added to assist in your reading comprehension. It’s rumored.

Oprah can hardly be blamed if people speculate on the contents of her will. And given that she is a huge philanthropist, wouldn’t it be shocking if a huge chunk of her estate isn’t going to charity?

Gosh she gives millions to charity and tells people about it? Stone the bitch already she’s clearly unholy. What exactly are you on about? Has she been noted for quoting those bible passages and you’re taking her to task for being a hypocrite? Otherwise why should she be chastised for violating some passages from your holy book? Personally until this thread I knew none of her charity work, but then again I don’t watch her show or pay any attention to her though I know I’ve heard references to her book list and magazine before. Perhaps you should just not watch her show or skip over articles about her if her charity work bugs you so much.

Umm nice story. So tell me what percent does she have to give before she’s a ‘good person’?

I’m “on about anything.”

I’m simply not starry eyed about a billionaire who gives away a small percentage of her net worth and then trumpets it all over the place.

Oprah The Philanthropist appears to be one more way to brand herself.

And I’m not buying.

Oh and if someone could enlighten me exactly how do people find out about her charity? Is it a case of her promoting the charity? i.e. “I set up charity X and donated a large sum of money you could help too?” A case of during an interview she gets asked a question about it and gives a detailed answer? Or does she go on her show and say “Wow! Look how awesome I am I gave tons of money to charity and that makes me a better person than you!” Because the first two are perfectly reasonable to me and if it’s the last why the hell do people watch her show?
