Can someone please tell Oprah Winfrey she isn't God?

Thanks for having the honesty to imply that you agree my cite is reprehensible, and you do not have a defense for it.

I didn’t hand you your ass in your last thread but if you have been waiting for God knows how long to drop the Oprah bomb, you need to let that shit go. That hate shit is no good for you.

You know that every single boarding school runs the lives of the students who live there, right?

God will forgive me brother.

Not to that degree, no sir. Name one thats not a borstal.

(and not going back on my word, just wanted to address any posts aimed at me first).

You know what I hate about Oprah Winfrey?

How UPPITY she is! Always acting like she’s so high and mighty just because a lot of stupid people watch her show! It’s not like she EARNED her success by being talented or smart or creative. She’s just famous because she spends all her time telling everyone how great she is.

UPPITY-rah, that’s what we should call her!

Both Jay and John are famous right now because of their skill at hosting talk shows. They have the talent to make their shows popular. Oprah’s topics may be different, but she has the skill to make her show popular while dozens of other hosts, both daytime and nightime have failed.

I’ve seen the quote several places online, but I can’t find a reliable cite, so I’ll concede that while her show is popular in the ratings, I don’t know where it ranks in history.

As for her magazine, her store, her giveaways, etc., I never said that I liked her, or that she was a good person, or anything about her other than that she came by her fame honestly, by being very good at a job that is appreciated by millions.

Well, I’ve always loved Oprah. Her show is way more uplifting than most talk-show drivel. The focus is largely on self-improvement. Oprah had a shit childhood and she made something meaningful out of her life; now she uses that life to contribute to other people. The rampant commercialism makes me smirk, but seriously where the fuck do you think she’d get all of that money to give away if not for advertisement? Dr. Phil was not the total douche he is now back when he was a 15-minute segment every Tuesday. She pretty much singlehandedly brought reading back into the mainstream. Whenever I’m in a Borders, I think, ‘‘Oprah did this.’’

Capitalism is not inherently bad, in fact many brilliant minds have learned to use people’s own self-interest for the good of the larger community (think private microfinance for example.) Oprah has done a fuckload more for others in the last year than most people do in a lifetime. She truly respects and celebrates her viewers and wants to spread the joy she has found. People clearly love her, or else they wouldn’t rally around her. It is my opinion that they have good reason to adore her. I’ve looked up to her ever since I was a little girl, and I still do.

What he said. Except for the part about having never watched the show. I have seen it a few times, though more than 10 years ago. She could be doing far worse, and far more wasteful things in the world.

I’m just amazed that somebody that scary-looking can get where she’s got to today. She’s not actually ugly as such - she’s quite a handsome woman in many ways - but she’s just… well… scary. Something about the eyes.

If I were a religious nutjob or even just a nutjob, I could imagine myself stalking her and muttering about the Angel of Death, before being led away in cuffs whimpering that she’d eaten my soul through the television. Luckily, not being a nutjob (hopefully), I can just turn off the TV. But hell, that’s one demonic-looking human being. Am I alone in thinking this?

People don’t love and adore her - they worship her, and that’s what scares me.

Those two statements don’t seem to go together for me. If you don’t watch what she’s doing and don’t care, how can you know if there are better or worse things that she can be?

I used to watch her show many years ago. . . .and loved it.

But a few years ago, I was watching and saw this*:

A woman was on the show who was accused of neglecting her son. They showed pictures of this woman’s house which was a mess. And partly because of that, they were accusing her of leaving her son in a filthy house. Her explanation was that when the pictures were taken, it was close to Christmas and some of the dishes in the sink were from the celebration and hadn’t gotten cleaned yet or something like that.

And Oprah said something like. . . .no one here believes you.

And I wondered how she could speak for her whole audience of live viewers like that, much less the entire body of people watching.

That’s the day I stopped watching her show and started agreeing that she should leave the judging up to God or to the people who she’s supposedly speaking for.
*and I had seen enough small incidences previous to this that this was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

A fair point. Even so, here’s how I think about it: On the plus side, she gives huge amounts of money to good causes, encourages others to do so, and generally seems to honestly want to spend her time and effort making other people happier. On the negative side, her fame has gone to her head somewhat and she has an overinflated sense of who she is and what her place is. I’ll take that tradeoff in a celebrity any day.

Fuck, so could I and I was an early adopter of “Clapton is God.” Just because somebody spends time in godhood doesn’t mean he or she STAYS there. Ask Jesus: First, he’s some wiseassed punk from Bethlehem. Then he’s God from Nazareth. Finally, he’s a gardener from Juarez.

I think Tim Wilson echos my feelings of Oprah and many others…But I could be wrong.

Surely, the coaster would have to be called the Rickroller.

Awhile ago, someone pitted Bill & Melinda Gates after they donated a few billion bucks to charity.

Apparently there is nothing that chaps off insecure, jealous losers more than self-made billionaires giving away their money.

Doesn’t that happen to pretty much everyone who achieves a level of celebrity anywhere near hers? Considering how colossally obnoxious some people get when they’re so famous, she’s all right by me.

Wow. Reading that OP was disturbing.

Haha fuck you??? You find that funny?? What is wrong with you that you seem to enjoy this happening to girls just so you can rag on Oprah?? Reading that OP, and seeing the demented glee with which it was written actually made me shudder.

Abuse in boarding schools was not invented by Oprah. I hate to tell you this, it happened before her school, and, in all likeliness will continue afterwards. At least she promptly and effectively dealt with the situation. Where’s your hatred for the Catholic church for the abuse suffered at their hands for decades that were covered up by the church, allowing the abuse to continue?

Oprah is a very interesting person for you to choose to irrationally hate. At most, I’ll give you she’s a little preachy. Hardly worth the venom you’re spewing. She also pays the employees for her Angel Network out of her pocket so that 100% of your donation actually goes to the charity. What a self-serving bitch.
