Can someone recommend a good Irish whiskey?

A son of the Old Sod, my father used to swear by Bushmills Black.

When I can get it, that’s what I drink. Usually it is Bushmills’ 12 or 10 or even Jameson depending where I am hanging my hat.

As to how, my father in his Gaelic brogue would say, “With water? Child you use water for blessing, you use whiskey for drinking.”

He always drank his neat. I always drink mine neat.

(His reaction to ice) “You don’t want to bruise the whiskey, now do you? Just too many sharp edges around ice cubes. Afterall, look what happened to the Titanic.”

A great and noble man, your da was, and a fine example to follow.

Great thread, I love Irish whiskey. Most of it’s been said, but there’s a new one out there called Michael Collins that’s not the most spectacular, but gives most of the mid brand stuff a run for it’s money.

I’ll second the Knappogue.

Personally, I won’t touch either Jamesons of Bushmills as I’ve had better & now they taste like crap to me.

Readbreast is Very good, but pricey & harder to find. Powers is ok and easier to find. Kilbeggan is pretty good & semi hard to find.

My personal favorite (Very hard to find in the US) is Connemara Peated potstill. The bouquet of Peat…it can actually bring back memories.

Ones You Can’t Get Here But Wish You Could Dept:

Green Spot- possibly better than Red Breast, and that’s saying something.

Crested Ten- Elder men of a certain generation prefer this slightly spicy whiskey. Its the bottle I brought to a distant relative when meeting him for the very first time and it help to wash the ‘damn yank’ comments away significantly.

While youre about it why not try some of the Scots single malts?
The finest alcohol you ll taste on gods earth bar none.

Because Scotch is Scotch and Whiskey is Whiskey. A good Irish whiskey and a good Scotch have little in common besides being great drinking whiskeys. Plenty of folks (myself included) don’t care for the salty, peaty, dirt flavored scotches as much as the grain flavored Irish stuff. Not that there’s anything wrong with a good glass of scotch, it’s just a totally different animal.

I finally got to try Connemara, and it really was quite good. Not quite worth the $45 (in my area) price tag, but still very good. I’ll enjoy the rest of my bottle and I’ll keep it in mind for special occasions.

As for scotch, I’m with Cluricaun on this one. While I do enjoy a good scotch, they really do tend to boast very different flavors than the Irish whiskeys I so love.
