The Straight Dope Irish Whiskey Appreciation Society

With the appropriate deferral to **Silenus ** and Ass for a Hat for ripping off the thread title style…

We’ve had Bourbon and we’ve had Scotch, but now it’s time for the most sublime of the whiskeys to shine. I do drink both of the aforementioned styles, but there’s nothing in my book that can touch the Irish varietal. Right now in my cabinet I have Black Bush, Bushmills 10 year old, Powers, and Jamesons.

Tell us about your favorites and how you take them.

Jamesons is of course now owned by Pernod, which is French, but it’s still decent tipple. I drink it, but it’s really for guests who request it.

Powers is my regular go to high “powered” daily indulgance, high proof and high burn, but it remains a delicous if somewhat blunt example. Decent price, big bang, I loves me some Powers.

The Black Bush was a gift brought back from Ireland by a travelling friend and the Bushmills 10 year was a valentines gift. Both are complex drinks with nice fruity-vanilla overtones and are only consumed straight- no ice, no mix. These are my snob whiskeys and I only share them with…well…nobody.

So let’s do it. What Irish do you drink, what am I missing out on, let’s just celebrate the *real * whiskey.

Jamesons and Bushmills.

While Bushmills is better, I like the rough and peaty feel of Jamesons. Which is not to say it is anything ordinary, no it is still sublime. Bushmills etc. are too good for mere consumption.

The only Irish in the liquor cabinet at present is a bottle of Black Bush. I’m considering what to purchase to make a batch of home-made Irish Cream for Thanksgiving. The recipe calls for either Jameson’s or Bushmill’s. Decisions, decisions…

You pour it, I’ll appreciate it!

I’ faith lads - Paddy’s! Lord that’s good stuff. Hot whiskey in Killarney, that’ll get me singin’.

I just cracked open a bottle of Jameson’s 18 year-old that I got as a gift, and I’m glad I didn’t pay for it. Don’t get me wrong; it’s good whiskey, but it’s not worth the price. I liked the 12 year-old when I had it, but at the time I wasn’t drinking single malt whiskies yet. Speaking of which, one of the local liquor stores carries three of the four Irish single malts that I know of, so I may have to go take a trip there soon.

Tullamore Dew is my personal favorite and the smoothest choice for Irish coffee. Black Bush is almost like a cognac and wonderful for special occasions.

I’m not a regular drinker of whiskey, but I love Bushmills. The best whiskey OR whisky I have ever tasted is Bushmills Millennium Malt, 25 year matured. Jameson 12 year old is very good too.

Beyond that, in order, Black Bush, Midleton, Jameson, then Powers, then Paddy (bleh). Never tasted Tullamore Dew: sounds like something for the tourists, though I may be wrong.

Tullamore was once a famous whiskey distilling town. Brian O Nolan/Flann O’Brien/Myles na gCopaleen’s father was stationed there as an excise man. All that’s left there now, however, is a heritage place alongside the canal. Tullamore Dew is, like most Irish whiskeys (apart from Bushmills) distilled in Midleton.

The story of Locke’s of Kilbeggan (Co. Westmeath) is exactly the same.

Went to an Irish Wake this past weekend. Drank 12 y.o. Redbreast. It was consumed faster than the 12 y.o. Jameson

I’m a heretic and I enjoy Bushmills sours. I do drink it neat, however. Jamesons is fantastic. I don’t dislike Tullamore Dew.

Funny, that’s about how I feel about Jamesons vs. Paddys. Jamesons is a little too smooth for me, Paddy’s has that bite that gets through the layer of scar tissue left by intemperate use of Jack Daniels many years ago. I guess I’m too cheap for Bushmills.

Jameson’s for me. Neat, water back. In a dark bar on a rainy weekend afternoon where I can ruminate on society and the games people play.

My favorite drink in the world is 12 year old Jamesons over ice. The younger stuff is OK too; I haven’t felt the need to shell out for an 18 year old bottle.

I’ve tried Black Bush and a couple of Bushmills, but they give me sort of a floral vibe that I don’t really care for. I’ve still got them, but the Jamesons is my drink of choice. Haven’t tried Tullamore Dew yet; would I like it, do y’think, if I like the earthy Jamesons taste?

I can proudly say that I am a Certified Irish Whiskey Taster.

My only real experience with Irish whiskey is the young Jameson’s in this recipe from this thread and I like it a lot.

Jameson’s usually, but my oldest daughter brought me back a bottle of duty-free Powers over the summer. As Fall weather comes in I will be enjoying it…

Ok, I finally quit buying bourbon and scotch for once, and grabbed a bottle of Bushmills’ Black Bush. Magically delicious. This is going to go fast. Soooo buttery neat, and if you put a splash of soda water on it, it becomes almost as sweet as a soft drink. I’ve had Jameson’s a few times, but I much prefer this.
Mmmmm, self-conscious zombie liquor.

My sister-in-law just took off for a trip to Ireland on Saturday, and she said she would bring me back a bottle of Tullamore Dew Old Bonded Warehouse Release from the distillery.

My new favorite for everyday is Teeling Small Batch. But for special occasions the 18 yr old Redbreast is incredible. Also am looking forward to the bottle of Yellow Spot that I ordered on line.
