Sounds baroque…this video is on youtube of a string quarter (well I 3 violins and a cello are a string quartet) playing in a Moscow subway station. Here.
I was thinking Vivaldi. But I don’t know.
ETA: If the word “cello” is highlighted, I didn’t do it! It seems to lead to some crazy old tips for a flat belly. (???) The word I highlighted for the link is “here.”
FWIW, a standard string quartet consists of two violins, a viola, and a cello. I couln’t tell whether that video featured 3 violins or whether one of them was a viola.
I like how the guy with the stroller walks away at the end without giving the musicians any money. Thanks for rewarding the people enriching your child’s mental development, jerk!
Cops are everywhere on the Moscow Metro (except, of course, when you need one). He may have been demanding his cut for letting them use that space.
Buskers are quite common in the Metro, so long as you’re near the city center (as are babushkas selling panty hose, cheap toys imported from China, and other such trinkets).
On the other hand, the string quartet might have had permission to perform in the subway. I know that New York City has a program in which some musicians perform in the subway stations with the blessing of the MTA.
Actually, the musicians rarely (if ever) perform inside the Metro stations themselves; rather, they take up positions in the pedestrian tunnels leading up to or linking the stations.
The Metro is considered a military and civil defense installation, so the authorities are touchy about what goes on there. I don’t know if buskers have to get permits, but you do need special permission to take photos, film, or videotape anywhere inside.
Hawkers will usually pack up their stuff and blend quietly into the crowd when the see the cops coming.
