Can text recipient tell what sender "names" him?

Droid X phone, Verizon.

One of my contacts I have named “Asshole” in my contacts list. If he calls me, I see “Asshole” and know right away who it is. Today, for the first time, I got a text message from him.

Is there any way from my reply for him to know I call him “Asshole”? Wouldn’t be the end of the world if he could, but I’m curious and need to reply before I can run trials and figure this out myself.

I’d be very surprised if he could see that. The text only contains the phone number it is from. It is your phone that says, “I know that phone number, and the owner of that number is ‘Asshole’, so this text is from ‘Asshole’”.

A lot of assholes are in denial, but a good many of them are self aware.

No way. Think about it - did his text to you give any clue what he calls you on his phone?

No, but I was thinking that maybe a technique was available to the more-tech-savy.

Text sent to Asshole. Thanks!!

Just a word of advice, if you have your phone set so it announces the caller or texter (like in the car during hands-free) make sure you turn that option off when someone like your mom or boss is with you.

“Incoming call from Fuckwad” is not something they need to hear.

You call your mom Fuckwad?

And why is she calling you when she’s right there with you?

It’s pronounced Fah Quad

This was a great ad for a NZ mobile provider back in the early days of voice dialing.

A man is in a car with an older woman. He presses a button on his mounted cellphone:

[Guy] Home
[phone] Dialing Home
[Wife] Hello
[Guy] I’ve just collected your mother from the airport - we are on our way. Bye.
[MiL] That’s great. Can you call Brian to let him know I’ve arrived?
[Guy] Um, I’ll do it when we get home.
[MiL] Oh, he’ll be worrying. Just a quick call.

[Guy - mumbled] Old Trout
[phone] no match
[Guy - somewhat louder] Old Trout
[phone] dialing Old Trout
[MiL] - {filthy look}
