I have a slight problem. I have a set of the UK edition (the one for children, not the more dignified versions for adults) hardcover Harry Potter books as well a set of the US edition (I live in the US), and as something of an Anglophile, I much prefer the language/spelling used in the British books, but I vastly prefer the layout and artwork of the US editions.
I’ve been trying to come up with a way to kind of merge the two, but haven’t come up with a really great solution. Has anyone done this sort of thing or have any ideas? I don’t want to mark up either hardcover edition permanently or even with pencil, just in case, so the only ideas I have really are to make an extensive list of changes by page number to use as reference while reading the US editions (makes reading a lot clumsier, though), or purchase a set of US edition paperback books (after the latest one is issued in paperback) to use for reading and “edit” them using the UK books as reference.
I’m leaning more towards the latter, but it does entail a moderate amount of money and a lot of time. And I know, it’s a bit ridiculous, which is why I’m hoping one of you can come up with a better solution that allows me to somehow combine the features I prefer from each edition.
(By the way, in case you were wondering and didn’t know, there is a surprising amount of difference between the two editions. Mainly spelling, grammar and vocabulary, of course, but a sentence of two that were added to the US editions for, as far as I can tell, clarification. Though I only made it through the first couple of chapters of the first book going back and forth recording the changes between the two editions before throwing in the towel and hoping one of you could come up with a better idea.)
So, any ideas?
