Can we fill this mix tape? Funky soul food!

It started with James Brown and hisNeck bones! Candy yams! Turnips! on Make It Funky. Which lead me to Joe Cuba’s Cornbread, hog maws and chitterlings on Bang Bang (oh man, I looooved Fania records. Why is it so hard to find these oldies on CD?). Which lead me to Cornbread, Hog Maws and Chitterlings by Bobby Hollaway.

And then I hit a wall. Three songs aren’t enough for a mixed tape. I figured, if there was any place that could help me fill out this song list, it’d be here. Sooo. . . you got anything?

I guess you’re going to say “Maggot Brain” doesn’t qualify?

Give Me a Pigfoot and a Bottle of Beer
Struttin’ with Some Barbecue

Can’t YouTube at work, but these are readily available.

This is more blues than funk, but the only thing that came to mind was Robert Cray’s Chicken in the Kitchen.

Jimmy Smith’s Back At the Chicken Shack? It’s jazz (and instrumental), though. But it’s Jimmy Smith!

Also more blues than funk (er, just plain blues), Who’ll Sop My Gravy? and Diggin’ My Potatoes.

Well, I presume you’d want Tony Joe White’s “Polk Salad Annie”.

Then there’s Herbie Hancock’s “Watermelon Man”. I love the version he did on Headhunters, but it has no lyrics. Jon Hendricks wrote lyrics to it; here’s his version.

Cornbread, Fish and Collard Greens - Anthony Hamilton
Hominy - Will Sessions (instrumental)

Thanks guys! I knew you wouldn’t let me down.

How about Chicken Gravy and Biscuits by Lil Ed and the Blues Imperials?

Play it with Amos Milburn’s Chicken Shack Boogie! You can even eat the last part that went over the fence! (And have some Alligator Wine, courtesy of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins.)

Well, you need some drink to go with that so Funky Cold Medina by (take your pick but i prefer Chuck Brown and the Soul Searchers).

Who says a funk band can’t play rock!

Seriously, “Actual Proof,” by Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters.
“Haw-Right Now” by Patrice Rushen.

“What is Funk” by Tower of Power (with the great Chester Thompson on Hammond)

Album “Alligator Boogaloo” by Lou Donaldson with Dr. Lonnie Smith on Hammond. Funk extreme. I heard someone say the way he got that scream off the Hammond was because it was broken, but DLS is such the master, I’m not sure he didn’t do something I can’t explain.

Red Beans” by Professor Longhair

Saturday Night Fish Fry” by Louis Jordan

Stupid asshole. Obviously, it’s “What Is Hip,” and, less obviously, the tune I was going for was “Squib Cakes,” which has a rare appearance by Chester Thompson (or most anyone of the jazz tradition, outside of a church) playing full pedals on a Hammond.

How about some Fried Neckbones And Some Homefries with Willie Bobo.

And of course you’ll need a little “Soul Sauce” from Cal Tjader.

Not entirely sure if it counts, but how about some Texas Cookin’with ol’ Guy Clark?

Or Junior Brown’s Catfish and Collard Greens (this was the only youtube vid I could find for this song. sorry)

How about a large serving of King Curtis’ “Memphis Soul Stew”?
