Ring in the New Year with Funk!

What’s your favorite funk song? It is something slow and grindy, like Maybe Your Baby or More Bounce to the Ounce? Something more disco like Love Rollercoaster or Holy Ghost? Something more jazzy like What is Hip?

You have to pick one. I’d prefer it to be from the 60s, 70s, or 80s, because more modern songs have such different production that they won’t mix in well with my (IMO) excellent funk playlist (here). However, if you must go with one of the new throwback funk songs from Thundercat or Silk Sonic, I get it! Talk about your favorites, but pick one.

I’m going to choose Thank You for Talking To Me Africa by Sly and the Family Stone:

Sticking with Sly:

I love that song! I can’t believe I didn’t already have it on the playlist. That’s remedied.

Tear the Foof Off . and. Flashlight. both by Parliament.

Back in the disco days, the club played thse at last call as the lights came on. Best days of my life, lol.

As another Sly Stone fan, I offer “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)”. Can’t get any funkier.

From the masters of funk:

Hey, pick one!

Are those like, the Eagles, with Glenn Frey, etc.?

That Funk Yourself song is going on the list for sure.

Yes, horrible ain’t it? Feel free to strike it from your list.

Haha! Yeah, it wasn’t going on.

ROOF. of course, Tear the Roof Off.

Excellent playlist !
I’d add…

  • Pow - Graham Central Station
  • Do that Stuff - Parliament

(among many others.)

But as it’s only 1, my favoritest tune of all time …
The Chicken - Maceo Parker

Nailed it in one.

That song is so good. My father was rehearsing in the same studio when they were mixing that down without the vocals. He said he was tempted to just give it up - they would never reach those heights.

I dig my Funk old school.

Car Wash - Rose Royce

Bit of Blue-eyed funk?

Aside: hey, @EinsteinsHund , d’ya know this cover?

Any funk list gotta have some James Brown. Sorry, I can’t figure out how to get the song to appear.

My husband is an old school funkster from back when he was a teenager in the middle of the last century. I could fill this thread with ooollllddddd deep cuts.
