Can we link to our own tweets or other social media?

I’m very active on Twitter and Instagram.

Can I link to my own posts on social media in response to a thread?

For example:
OP: What did you think of this movie?
Dalej42: I thought it sucked <link to my twitter rant about how much I hated that film>
OP: How bad is the snow where you are?
Dalej42: Well, don’t let a chihuahua out in my neighborhood <link to my Instagram showing massive snow mounds>

I don’t want to be accused of self promoting my own social media, but sometimes it’s just easier to give a link.

In discussion now, we’ll get back to you.

Would a better solution be just to copy and paste from Twitter?

It would be really really stupid if you weren’t.

I would dislike seeing such in Great Debates and Politics & Elections.

The idea here is to debate and discussion here. We dislike arguments and posts that are just a like and ‘What do you think’? That applies whether you’re linking to someone else’s argument or your own.

Just saying - the OP has buttons with which to contact him via AIM and Yahoo Messenger, which don’t even exist anymore.

IMHO …

I’m fine with stuff that the SDMB doesn’t do like links to pics and videos as long as it is a clear what those are. (None of this “What do you think of this video?” nonsense.)

Since the SDMB does text and it’s your text, C&P it here.

Think of it this way: 1 person does a small task once vs. a lot of people clicking on a link, scrolling around, reading it (in an interface that is different from the SDMB), closing the tab and all that. Seems more efficient to me.

And that doesn’t even include replying where someone might want to post a quote snippet or some such.

If you’re allowed to do that, count on some people (me, for one) never going offsite to read what you posted on Twitter, or to look at the photo on Instagram.

Agreed. I wouldn’t either.

That being said, I think it’s sensible that if you wrote an entire screed somewhere in a long social media post (or series of them) that you might summarize your thoughts before linking to your offsite ramblings so that people could read more if they liked. That way you’re not copying and pasting a TLDR manifesto on the boards, but if someone wants to know more about your thoughts then that’s available to them.

Why is it in discussion? Why isn’t the answer “Yes, of course.”

Because we want discussion happening here, not on Twitter or wherever.

This doesn’t make the tiniest bit of sense, but whatever.

If you want more discussion, then do away with the self defeating hijack rule and let threads grow organically. Cutting off discussion doesnt make more of it.

So you would rather talk about hijacks rather than the subject of the OP? Interesting.

I originally though of writing “It would be really really stupid if you weren’t, so you probably won’t be”, but decided was being too harsh on TPTB. Looks like maybe I should have included it, because it looks like they actually are leaning towards being really, really stupid on this.

The hijack rule should, over time, actually promote more discussion as it will create more space for such. Two discussions, instead of one that converts, is better.

Better for the posters, better for the board overall.

It does us no good. None. To have discussions moving off the board and away.

I’ve seen people linking to their offboard writings, and I very rarely read them. It’s not going to be an effective strategy, IMO.

On the other hand, if someone wants to quote themselves from another page, when it fits into a conversation, I think that should be fine. I’ve certainly done that: I may post a brief review of a book/movie/game on another site, like Facebook or Goodreads, and then instead of writing a new paragraph to give the same opinion here, I’ll copy it over and edit it a little to fit the discussion I’m in.

I’d prefer folks copy the text here, or at least treat it like any other link, where they quote enough of the link to make their point. If you’re linking to a picture, an explanation of what you’re linking to would be helpful.

Because we want our users to discuss and debate stuff here and not take it off to some other site.

It’s a community. It’s also a business and we need discussion and query between people to stay in business, that’s how this works.

Because we want people actually interact with one another and not just copy what they said somewhere else, there’s not much discussion in that.

You made a great social media post about something? It’s a first draft for what you’re going to say on the Straight Dope Message Board. Where (hopefully) it will get more than a thumbs up.

For heaven’s sake, allowing people to link to their social media accounts won’t “move the discussions off board.” How could it?

The board doesn’t even allow images. If someone wants to link to a picture of their new kitty or all the snow in their yard, they have no choice but to use an outside site. What difference does it make if it’s Imgur or Instagram?

You already allow people to link to their blogs. It doesn’t “Move the discussion off the board.” If some one links to their Twitter account to say “Here’s what I thought of Knives Out” people who want to discuss the movie on this board will continue to discuss the movie on this board. You know, instead of following the person on Twitter and hoping every other doper does also.

I get that this board goes into peak “Old man yells at cloud” mode at any mention of social media–ironic seeing as Facebook is most popular among older people but never mind–but at least admit you are being silly here.
