It seems that in the time before recycling was so organized, we filled many landfills with things that we’d recycle today. I’m sure the valuable of scrap materials will rise as time goes on, so there must be a point where the value of the scrap metals, plastics, glass, etc., will make this profitable. Is this feasible?

It might be impractical in some locations, as landfills sometimes have parks or freeways built on top of them. I believe there is one of each, for example, in the Santa Clara / Mountain View vicinity in the S. F. Bay Area.
