Can you answer the "pay to post" question please

I was a whisper away from sponsoring some guy (because he and his girl looked so cute together) but then I remembered that April was coming up and Ed hinted at ending this P2P thing.

It’s easy. If those April Charter Members still have to subscribe, then fine, if not, I missed the memo.

Have a nice day kids.

I’m interested in this, too. Thanks.

Isnt’ the phrase “A whisker away”?

Hah, I thought this thread was dead. And I thought bumping it would be considered in poor taste, even though I thought about it with all those Charter Member subscriptions coming up.

Just to make sure I wasn’t drunk and imagined the whole thing, I dug up the cite:

[QUOTE=Ed Zotti on 11/30/07]
So we’re starting to think maybe we should start offering unlimited free posting again. I emphasize that no decision has been made. It’s too soon to say if remnant ads are going to be a dependable revenue source. For all we know the banner ad market could tank. If, however, it becomes apparent that more page views = more income, we may well decide to go to a two-track model. If you register, you can post for free but you have to put up with ads. If you subscribe, your SDMB experience remains bannerless.

As I say, we’re still thinking about it, but this sounds like a win-win approach to us. Subscription revenue and potential banner-ad income for 3.5 million PVs are close to being a wash. SDMB subscribers have made it clear that in return for their money they expect no banners. If we go to two tracks, they’ll have that choice - our revenue is the same either way.

I, Pat, Jerry and other CL folks will be meeting next week to discuss the above. If we go to two tracks, we’ll need to ramp up our server capacity in a major way, upgrade the software, and deal with the search lockup issue and other problems that have been too long postponed. This is not, repeat NOT, a promise. But I think you’ll agree this could work out to everyone’s advantage.

I just feel a little guilty for some strange reason whenever I see the “sponsor a member” thread, or a new “welcome thread” in MPSIMS.

I’m not due to resubscribe until July, so an answer before then would suffice.

Justin baby, thanks for clearing that up.

Gee, you don’t think they’ll post a huge honking announcement when they make a decision and are ready to let us know, do you? Until then, I suspect you’ve gotten all the answer you’re going to get.

Gee, you don’t think his polite question at least deserved a polite response from an Admin?

Yes, I do, and I wish that an Admin had a response. But we don’t, we don’t have any knowledge other than what Ed posted back then. ::: shrug ::: So, much though we’d like to be able to give a response, we can’t, we have nothing to say. Please do consider that, in saying nothing, I’m extremely polite about it, though.

PS - Q.E.D. is NOT an Admin, and has no official standing in terms of this board. His opinion is his opinion, the same as any poster. The SDSAB title has to do with writing staff reports, nothing more.

To the PS: I know that and I am pretty sure bbs2k knew that. Q.E.D. just seemed more snarky that needed.

I figured that you guys didn’t have an answer yet. **Ed ** made it clear from the quoted post back in the banner ad debacle that the decision was being made at a level that would seem to leave you out of loop. It just looked odd to see other posts responded to and bbs2k’s left orphaned.

April is coming up, though, and it would be nice to have an update as to what is expected of us. A whole lot of us have dues due next month, so it would be nice to have a heads-up. I feel squeemish too with all the “sponser me” threads… I think the best thing for all of us is to have some plans posted by CL for how we’ll proceed before the April rush.

My prediction?

If the board is to remove the need for “pay to post”, it will be AFTER the April subscription rush.

Well, I’d hope they would clarify it before the april resubscribe.

{Bolding mine}

Actually, I’m not sure when my dues are up and I’d like to keep my “Charter Member” title intact. I was trying to determine the exact date (or month) of my membership termination but there doesn’t appear to be any indication in my profile. Anybody know where that information may reside (other than bugging the staff for an email reply)?

Actually, it’s simpler than that. Just click on “suscribe” and the expiration date of your memberhip will appear on the page.

I note when I do that that there is a list of member benefits – and PM is listed as a “maybe in the future.” TPTB may want to update the list to indicate that it’s a current benefit.

Or not, if y’all are backing away from the PTP model.
