Can You Do Something With My Hair?

I’m at a loss as to what to do with my hair. I want to wear it long, but it just doesn’t seem to work on my head. Maybe I need to grow it more (I’ve been growing it for about a year, maybe a little longer); maybe I need to have it tightened up; maybe I need to scrap it and go back to a short hairstyle.

Here are eight pictures of my hair: the first four are without gel and just hanging loose, post-shower. The next four are with product (L.A. Looks Mega-Hold gel) and “styled” (and here “styled” means “slicked back because I can’t think of anything else to do with it”).

If you are in the hair-styling industry and can make recommendations for me - what kind of cut/style, what kind of product to use, etc. - I’d appreciate it.

Also, if I’ve committed some kind of breach of etiquette here (by asking a hair professional to do something for me for free that they would ordinarily charge for), you have my apologies.

Thanks!

I’m not in the hair styling business, but the fourth pic is the best look. I vote for wearing it short and coming it back like that.

They’re all the same look, just the first four are no product, the last four with product & combed. I just used the different angles so a hair stylist could get a sense of the shape of my head.

I like the slicked back look, but I think a chin length cut would show off your great eyes more.

I like it best with no product. You have a nice wave to your hair. Slicked back, to me, it just looks greasy.

It’s a bit of an awkward stage for growing out hair - not quite short and neat, but not quite long enough for a ponytail or that romantic long flowing hair look.

I think you should keep growing it, but the ends are looking a bit thin and raggedy and it needs a bit of a trim. I wouldn’t change it much from the way it looks now, just a bit of tidying.

Real Talk: I think your hair is too thin to look good long. (A receding hairline never works with long hair either.) I say cut it short and move on.

A little more beard, I think, to cover the incipient double chin, and a slight hair trim as needed for any split ends. With a little more length, I think a back-of-the-neck ponytail would work.

(BTW, do you have a bad eye? At first glance, I would have thought I was looking in a mirror.)

I agree, sorry. Also agree with the more beard comment. More beard, less had head hair.

Usually I’m down with long hair but I recently saw this listicle on Buzzfeed and I thought, at least for these guys, chopping off the mane really works. I think you’d look good like #7.

I think your hair is too thin to really rock out at a long length. And product DEFINITELY doesn’t help - like **brainstall **said, it just looks greasy.

But since you’re not afraid to grow-it-show-it, you can really do something cool with a hair style. It just should be short and clean.

Man-bun

DISCLAIMER: I really, really, really hate facial hair so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

I think a very short cut would be very flattering on you. The fifth picture down showed me what you’d look like with a nice neat GQ sort of cut. (Although I’m cool with the slicked-back ponytail.)

I also think being clean-shaven would take at least ten years off your face.

Also, unless you are in a rock band, I don’t think long hair really works on men after about age 30.

I agree. (Although #5 on that list just makes me sad!)

I think you kinda look like Brian O’Halloran from the movie Clerks. I saw him at a con a few weeks ago and he looks pretty good right now with a short but coifed hairstyle. His typical look, really. When he grows his hair out he doesn’t look nearly as…kempt.

Mohican. Short, except where it matters. Also, makes you look taller.

Although I just have mine in a pony tail.

Ponytail it.

Cut shorter.
Add product.
Dry until fully dry.
Brush out product.
Shave off beard & mustache.

Post “after” picture!
