Can you help identify this (possibly Masonic) object

One of my favourite scientists is having problems identifying an object, and I thought the Teeming Millions might be able to help out.

A description of the object can be found here.

Many thanks - Karl is likely to mention who helped him solve this puzzle on his radio programme or in his newspaper columns, so instant fame is your incentive here.

FWIW he might get a better and more accurate response with a link to a picture of the object in question in addition to his written description.

I’m searching google now for pics of masonic decorations - he says the object won’t scan. We’re trying to think of another way for him to post an image.

Here is a picture of a Masonic Cornucopia www.capture.cwc.net/images/2451.jpg

In Masonic Lore a CORNUCOPIA is a curved goat’s horn overflowing with fruit and ears of grain that is used as a decorative motif emblematic of abundance : an inexhaustible store.

It is used as a symbol by a Senior or Junior Steward.
