I have a Toshiba satellite laptop. I have screwed up the sound. I installed a newer version of a Realtek HD sound driver that didn’t work. So I uninstalled it, and went to the Toshiba site and downloaded the driver listed for my model. It still doesn’t work.
Other possibly relevant facts:
In the Device Manager. "Realtek HighDefinition Audios"is listed as the name of the controlled under “Sound video and game controllers”, and the name of the provider is also listed as Realtek.
But … Also in the Device Manager, but under “System Devices” there is a device also called “High Definition Hardware Controller”, but the driver provider is listed as Microsoft, with a different version and release date. There is an option to “update the driver” but when I try it it tells me I have the best version installed.
There is also an option to uninstall it, which I did once, and it prompted me to reboot. When I did, something commanded a re-install, and the program was back in place before I got to my desktop.
I’m guessing that these two drivers are confusing things. I do know that the working driver listed under the “Sound video and game controllers” was Realtek, but I don’t know for sure what was listed under the “System devices”.
One other thing – when trying to troubleshoot with a Windows support page, I was prompted to open the volume mixer to make sure nothing is muted. That window tells me “No audio device is installed”.
