Can you O.D. on Metamucil?

I can’t remember if I took my morning dose or not. It’s kind of, you know, important.

IMO, taking ONE additional dose won’t hurt you. It’s just a fiber supplement. IANAD, etcetera etcetera. Also, someone will probably be along to move this to IMHO in short order.

There’s been a couple times when I’ve taken Citrucel twice in a day - for the same reason you have here. I couldn’t remember and took it again, then remembered afterwards that I had taken it. Hasn’t hurt me any by doing that so I think you’d be okay to take it.

Medical advice is best suited to IMHO.

Spoilered for TMI:

If you take a lot of Metamucil it sort of bonds your poo into a plasticy substance. Worst case scenario: you will have to grab the end (using TP) and pull it out of your butt.

But you should be ok with just one extra dose.

Most metamucil users can quintuple their daily intake of the stuff without it threatening their health or life.

Doing so could threaten their social life, though.

Avoid taking it with certain medicines though, as it could interfere with their absorption.

And drink a LOT of water when taking Metamucil!

So that’s what that one night’s deposit was all about…

Which kinds of medicine? Right now I’m only taking allergy meds, NSAIDs, the occasional Xanax (soon to be replaced with Ativan, hopefully) and my regular vitamin supplements.

Almost anything that you take within an hour or so either way - since the stuff draws in water and bulks up the stool, it’s always possible that it might hold up some of the medication and affect how much is available to your body.

It would all depend on where the medication is designed to be absorbed, I think (enteric coated so it gets down to the intestine vs. the stomach).

When I was given something to help with high bilirubin levels (or something… gallbladder attack caused high bile salts in the bloodstream), I was given cholestyramine and counseled to not take it within an hour or so of other drugs for that reason. Wound up not needing it, as the problem was resolving on its own by then.

But if it’s something where a significant variance on your blood levels would be a problem, it’s worth doing some research. In your case I’d think the Xanax would be the biggest worry but that’s pretty much a wild-ass guess on my part.

(IANAD!!!)

Just had a perfectly healthy otherwise (not a drug abuser, no eating disorder, etc) 22 year-old at our hospital die of fecal impaction.* (For some reason the family chose not to operate and he chose to let it get so bad he looked like he was 9 months pregnant before seeking medical help, so we were obviously dealing with people incapable of reason.)

So yeah, I vote risk the extra dose.

*Bet you didn’t know you could die from being “full of shit” eh? The more you know…

Hmm, guess I’ll have to talk to a doctor about the drug interactions. How mundane.

Another question: Is it possible to become Metamucil-dependent? It’s kind of annoying since I’ve discontinued the meds which caused this problem (until I find a competent doctor, that is) but whenever I try and taper off, my bowels ain’t having none of that shit. Yes, I know at my age it’s nothing to complain about, but between cigarettes, energy drinks and Minecraft, I’ve got enough addictions to worry about. :frowning:

You might want to just wander into Walgreens or whatever and ask a pharmacist about this. This does happen with lots of mundane OTC drugs, the most common being nasal spray which is referred to as “rebound” effect. It works so well you keep using it and it suddenly doesn’t work anymore and everything is way more horrible.

Metamucil instructions say not to take any meds 2 hours before or after.

Also, doesn’t extra fiber sometimes make constipation worse? I wonder how much you have to take before that happens.

If you don’t consume adequate water, I can imagine it would be a bad thing to add the extra fiber. Sort of like adding aggregate to concrete - just helps things set up even harder .

Oh - and while Metamucil wouldn’t have the same problems as a stimulant laxative (as far as I understand) but it’s possible that your body has gotten “used to” functioning with the extra effect caused by that - as in, won’t keep things soft enough on its own. If you’re trying to wean off the supplement, maybe try adding a bit more fiber (plus plenty of water) to your diet at the same time.

My diet’s a mess, that’s for certain.

And I do plan to see a regular doctor asap, possibly even tomorrow or early next week. The only reason I haven’t yet is because my life’s in a state of major transition, and there are other priorities that take, umm, priority. (See? No time to come up with a proper idiom…)

Thanks everyone for the advice, it’s been extremely helpful.
