Mashable says the only forbidden wagers are $69 (sex), $666 (Satanism), and $14, $88, and $1488 (white supremacy dog whistles), but that $420 is allowed. Mattea Roach, however, says it’s banned.
420 refers to the act of smoking marijuana, given that April 20 is considered an occasion for celebrating the use of the drug.
They got that backwards. April 20 is the holiday because it’s “4/20.” The 420 came first. (Accounts differ on the origin of 420 being associated with pot. Some say it’s from the California penal code section. Others day a group of high school kids would meet every day at 4:20 and get high).
It’s been officially confirmed that it originated from the Waldos (i.e. the high school kids that met at 4:20 PM to smoke). No one else has counterclaimed them.
It would require extraordinarly weird wagers earlier in the game for that to happen.
Say, for example, that during one on the Daily Doubles the player wagers $931 because his birthday is September 31 or something. Such a wager would be extremely weird, but neither illegal nor unheard of, since 99.99% of all wagers place on the show are in multiples of $100 or maybe $10 in rare cases. In a case like that, a player could be compelled to wager $69 in a later Daily Double/Final Jeopardy. But I doubt it’s ever happened or is going to happen.
Somebody wagering $420 for the lulz? I mean, lots of Americans smoke dope, but something tells me that if you put “People Who Think Wagering $420 On Jeopardy Is Funny” and “People Who Are Likely To Appear On Jeopardy” on a Venn Diagram, there’s likely to be little to no intersection.
No for nothing, I think such a bid would be hilarious, AND I smoke dope, AND I -think- I could qualify for Jeopardy, at least academically, but other than taking the online test a couple of times I’ve never made it very far into the selection process.
